The U.K. will experience blackouts this coming winter. Because of this, the National Grid, a British multinational electricity utility company, suggested continuing to import the EU's energy supplies.
The alarming detail was shared by the electricity firm during its recent annual Winter Outlook, which happened on Thursday, July 28.
"While Britain is not reliant on Russian gas to the extent that the rest of Europe is, it is clear that the cessation of flows of gas into Europe could have knock-on impacts, including very high prices," said the National Grid via Reuters.
UK Blackouts Expected To Happen This Winter
According to Express UK's latest report, the United Kingdom needs to continue importing energy supplies from the EU so that blackouts can be prevented.
As of writing, the U.K. imports electricity from its neighboring countries via cables. The nation acquires its needed energy supplies commonly from Europe, Norway, France, and Belgium.
However, the National Grid explained that these EU countries might be affected by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
European leaders explained that the Russian government has been making contingency plans to reduce natural gas flows. They added that the country might also cut its energy supplies going to the EU countries.
This means that the United Kingdom will have difficulty acquiring energy assistance from the EU if European Union countries are experiencing energy shortages.
Will EU's Energy Supplies Be Enough?
As of writing, the National Grid claimed that one of the EU countries might be able to meet the energy supply demands of the United Kingdom.
This is specifically France. The electricity utility company explained that they are still monitoring the outlook in France and will soon undertake further assessments.
The National Grid added that they are also working with the government to keep coal stations in reserve so there will be enough energy supplies by winter.
