Tesla Standard Connectivity: No More Lifetime Connection, Eight Years Use Before Subscription Need

Tesla's Standard Connectivity allows everyone to use the necessities available in the vehicle. Still, it has an expiration date compared to the previous lifetime deal for new EV purchases. From this day forth, new electric vehicle purchases from the company will require them to purchase the subscription to its standard connections after eight years since the EV's purchase.

Previously, it offered a lifetime freebie for all users to connect on its basic needs for the vehicle.

Tesla's Standard Connectivity lets people connect to the music streaming via a device's Bluetooth, navigation on maps, and the basic connectivity of the electric vehicle to WiFi. The company has updated its policies and will soon charge users to use these basic features on its infotainment systems after eight years since the EV's purchase.

Previously, Tesla offered the Standard Connectivity features for the drivers and owners for free, and it is available to access for life or until the car is decommissioned or rendered unusable.

Nevertheless, the policy change applies to all the latest purchases of clean energy vehicles, focusing on the Standard or basic connections in the car.

Pay and Subscribe to Tesla Connections for New EVs

According to CNET's report, users now have to pay and subscribe for the feature eight years after the EV's purchase.

However, they may opt for the Premium Connectivity service from the company that offers many additions to their infotainment system. It includes:

  • Live Traffic Visualization
  • Sentry Mode's View Live Camera
  • Video Streaming
  • Satellite-View Maps
  • Caraoke
  • Music Streaming
  • Internet Browser

Tesla and its Features in the Car

Tesla EVs feature a significant connection for all, and it is connecting to the internet without any additional cost that it would use for navigation, music streaming, updates, and other feature available in the infotainment system. However, that changed back in 2018 when the company changed its policies to charge EV owners for internet connections.

There is also a different tier for the connectivity features of the Tesla EV, and it is the Premium Connectivity that brings people more functions from the vehicle. However, it is an upright subscription either for a monthly or annual setup, with its price varying on the duration.

The public may opt for the $9.99 per month subscription or go for the 12-month deal for $99 plus applicable tax.

Even in its Standard Connectivity, Tesla is changing its policies and will charge EV owners in the future, especially for the new purchases starting this week and succeeding EV acquisitions. It may be a different policy for Tesla, and it may or may not affect those purchasing EVs now as it gives eight years, but it still brings a change to its past policies that provides the connections without a fee before.
