A controversial new sauce called Pink Sauce is currently breaking the internet.
The inventor of the said condiment, 29-year-old Chef Pii, filmed clips on TikTok that showed her dunking French fries, fried chicken, and vegetables into her culinary creation.
The TikTok clips have gone viral since, and it now has more than 40 million views.
However, the Miami-based chef has been forced on the defensive after thousands of social media users questioned the legality and ingredients of the sauce, which she has been marketing on TikTok at $20 per bottle since July 1
Pink Sauce Goes Viral
According to The Washington Post, the controversial condiment, described by many as having the same color and consistency as Pepto-Bismol indigestion medicine, has spawned many other videos online as TikTok users engage in debate over whether it is safe to eat or not.
The debate over the legality of the sauce has now reached Twitter.
At first, the chef refused to reveal her secret ingredients. However, due to the thousands of questions and requests that she got, she eventually told her followers what she used to make the sauce.
Chef Pii uses sunflower seed oil, milk, raw honey, distilled vinegar, and dragonfruit to give it its distinctive hue, according to The Guardian.
Backlash Over Pink Sauce
According to NBC News, Chef Pii had to deal with the backlash after selling the product.
This is because many people are questioning the poor leaky packaging, sketchy ingredients, whether it should be refrigerated or not, and whether the sauce has complied with the protocols of the Food and Drug Administration or FDA.
A TikToker named Demetrius Fields revealed in a post that it is not wise to purchase products that are not as transparent with how it is done.
Chef Pii told The Washington Post in an interview that she knows that the world is curious about her creation, but "they are being malicious."
The chef's product is legal and safe, according to her. She revealed that she makes it in a commercial facility that is certified by the FDA, and she isn't just doing it at home as some TikTokers suggest.
Chef Pii added that she has been using it for a year and is also serving it to her clients, and no one has gotten sick so far.
As for the quantities, a typo in the graphic design of the ingredients mixed up the number of grams of product with the number of services, as it shows 444 servings instead of 30 servings totaling 444 grams.
Chef Pii has apologized for the mistakes and said that her small business is "moving really fast."
However, some netizens are not convinced. Some are pointing out that the chef is filling used mayo bottles with ranch dressing and "red Kool-Aid dust" and then shipping it through ground mail to customers, and it takes three weeks for them to receive it.
After getting backlash over the product's shipping, she added "please refrigerate" in the instructions. Chef Pii has sold a total of 700 bottles since the sauce went viral.
