Ubisoft has just announced the cancellation of "Splinter Cell" VR after spending several years in its development. The cancellation of the title comes along with the cancellation of "Ghost Recon Frontline" and two other games that remain unannounced.
Ubisoft Decides to Cancel 'Splinter Cell' VR and Three Other Non-VR Games
First reported by Axios' Stephen Totilo, Ubisoft has officially canceled the development of "Splinter Cell" and "Ghost Recon Frontline" along with two other games that remain unannounced.
According to the story by Upload VR, the first time the company announced "Splinter Cell" VR was way back in 2020 during Facebook Connect. The announcement of the title came alongside another major game, "Assassin's Creed" VR.
'Assassin's Creed' VR Remains in Development
Although "Assassin's Creed" VR remains in development, "Splinter Cell" VR has officially been canceled along with three other projects that are reportedly non-VR. Yves Guillemot, the CEO of the company, noted in a document accompanying the call that they are adapting to the current economic uncertainties "through cost optimization."
In an article by GamesRadar, Guillemot noted that the company was also placing even more focus on other bigger development opportunities. The company's decision is reportedly evident by its choice to stop the development of "Splinter Cell" VR and three other non-VR games.
'Splinter Cell' VR and 'Assassin's Creed' VR Announced in Partnership with Facebook/Oculus
Both "Splinter Cell" VR and "Assassin's Creed" VR were announced in partnership with Facebook/Oculus. There were, however, no specific headsets that were mentioned during the announcement of the partnership.
Early reports coming from 2019 reportedly indicated that the releases were actually set to be on certain Oculus exclusives. Red Storm Entertainment by Ubisoft was responsible for leading the development of both titles.
Ubisoft was Planning to Hire 17 Positions for 'Splinter Cell' VR
The projects were in collaboration with Ubisoft Dusseldorf, Ubisoft Reflections, and even Ubisoft Mumbai. During the start of 2021, Ubisoft was reportedly planning to hire 17 different positions on the "Splinter Cell" VR.
The positions that Ubisoft was planning to hire include a "Network Programmer for multiplayer functionality." After the initial announcement came out back in 2020, both Ubisoft and Meta had still to show any gameplay or even provide updates regarding the development of "Splinter Cell" VR.

Next 'Assassin's Creed' Game to be Called 'Nexus'
Reports back in April, however, included the circulation of the rumored title of the next "Assassin's Creed" game. The new game would have reportedly been called "Nexus."
The rumors even included supposed menu footage from the game when it was running on Quest. As per Games Radar, the full "Splinter Cell" remake will be a different project that is still being headed up by Ubisoft Toronto.
Istvan Tajnay, the managing director of the game, notes that he hopes to see the new remake "broaden the horizons of the series" and potentially even reach new players.
