Following a widespread outage of the Microsoft Teams platform, thousands of organizations around the world had to stop their operations.
On Thursday, July 21, thousands of customers were unable to use the office software, which is essential for a remote working setup. This platform was popularized after the COVID-19 pandemic forced employees to work from their homes.
What Caused The Widespread Outage?
The Microsoft platform was listed as offline on outage monitoring sites for hours, depriving workers of their essential online workstations.
Due to the pandemic lockdowns of the preceding few years, many businesses continue to function in a hybrid setup, and platforms like MS Teams have enabled users to connect to their workspaces.
According to Microsoft, the issue was caused by a disrupted connection to their internal storage service.
Users took to social media to complain about how it was difficult for them to send messages, start conversations and meetings, or access the Teams function on the platform.
The company did not provide information on how many users were affected, but it did state that anyone trying to use Microsoft Teams may be affected by the problem. To confirm the extent of the impact, the company said it is currently looking into alternative services.
Many organizations and academic institutions are dependent on MS Teams to streamline internal communication and work operations.
During the pandemic, MS Teams' user base expanded as the demand for teleconferencing and messaging technologies skyrocketed. Microsoft claimed to have more than 270 million active monthly users of their Teams program in January.
At the peak of the platform's outage, more than 7,000 users reported problems with Microsoft Teams to Downdetector.com.
Update: Is MS Teams Back?
However, according to recent sources, MS Teams was once again available for some users, the business announced on Thursday, following an hour-long outage that prevented thousands of users from using the chat service.
Additionally, Downdetector.com previously revealed that there were over 150 instances of users reporting problems with Microsoft Office 365.
Microsoft tweeted that it had determined the downstream effects of Teams integration on a number of Microsoft 365 services, including Microsoft Word, Office Online, and SharePoint Online.
As of writing, Microsoft is doing its best to revive MS Teams back to its regular operations.
The company said that they have "taken action" to reroute a component of traffic to ensure that users will feel relief within the platform's environment.
