Apple is taking its hands-free plans seriously, as iOS 16 takes a giant step forward with the aid of the U1 chip.

iOS 16's Hands-Free Features

In a WWDC held last month, Apple announced a significant feature to anticipate for the iOS 16. According to the tech giant, the new OS will enable third-party accessories with U1 chip compatibility to connect with iPhone apps even though the program is running normally in the background, allowing new hands-free user experiences.

Qorvo said in a press release today that this new functionality will give U1-enabled accessories to function simultaneously with iOS 16 apps. This will reportedly "trigger real-time actions based on your precise location, such as turning on lights or playing music when you enter a room, even if you aren't actively using the apps at the time," per Mac Rumors.

President of Qorvo Mobile Products, Eric Creviston said, "Our extensive portfolio of UWB chips, modules, and software will help accelerate the ecosystem of connected UWB products and accessories. Qorvo is a vital part of making a truly seamless user experience reality, where innovative technologies anticipate our needs and enrich our lives."

Qorvo also announced that its Ultra Wideband processors have been validated by Apple's MFi Program, paving the path for third-party MFi-certified U1 accessories. Plus, their chips may be used by accessory manufacturers to produce peripherals that are compatible with U1-equipped iPhone and Apple Watch devices.

Besides Qorvo's role in iOS' new capabilities, Apple's own accessories can also provide accurate, directionally aware experiences as well. Users may, for example, hold an U1-equipped iPhone near a HomePod mini to "hand off" music playback with visual, audio, and tactile effects. U1-enabled iPhones can also use the Precision Finding function, which makes it quicker to find an AirTag.

More information regarding the hands-free features known as Nearby Interactions with U1 may be found on Apple's developer website. Expect that there will be more updates coming soon to the platform.

Other things to expect from iOS 16

Sure, everyone wants to see what this hands-free U1 chip can achieve, but iOS 16 will also include several widely anticipated additions. According to Tech Times, it will also include a new lock screen that is highly customizable with widgets and even allows you to arrange notifications at the bottom of your screen. If you have a visitor, you can easily give your Wi-Fi password to them so they may join your network.

There's also haptic feedback previously only available by downloading third-party keyboards like Gboard. You may recover deleted chats in messages, exchange currency with the camera, live translate, and many other things.

The iOS 16 developer beta is currently available for anyone who can't wait for the operating system's formal release later this year. However, for non-developer Apple customers, the new operating system is set to be available on all compatible devices this year, with no specific date announced as of yet.
