'Warframe' Team Shifts to Magic After 9 Years of Sci-Fi with New Game Called 'Soulframe'

From sci-fi to magic, after nine long years of focusing purely on sci-fi, the "Warframe" team has decided to dip its hands elsewhere and now focus on magic with a new game coming out called "Soulframe."

Digital Extremes to Come Out with New Game Called 'Soulframe'

According to the story by Kotaku, Digital Extremes, the popular studio behind "Warframe," announced recently a new they will be releasing called "Soulframe." The game was described by the publication as "most definitely not the sequel to the former."

"Warframe" is a popular fast-paced shooter that is set in a certain sci-fi universe, but Digital Extremes' new game, "Soulfram," is going to be a fantasy MMO that comes with more emphasis on melee combat.

'Warframe' Director Wants to Focus on Something New

The publication noted that it was not a sequel or even a spiritual successor, and after almost a decade of overseeing the same game, it's logical for Steve Sinclair, the game's director, to leave "Warframe" in order to focus on something completely new.

A video was uploaded to YouTube showing a five-minute trailer of the game. The trailer contained no traces of "Warframe" and focused deep into magical lore with a heavier focus on magic and medieval weapons.

How 'Soulframe' Differs from 'Warframe'

Sinclair gave a statement to the Washington Post in an interview that talked about the brand new project. As per the director, while "Warframe" is "focused on shooting, this one's focused on melee."

Sinclair explained that "Warframe" was designed to be incredibly fast and with crazy high speed. The new game, however, is going to be slower but heavier while still having a lot of different similarities to the genre that they have experience with.

Director Says They Got Inspiration from Princess Mononoke and The NeverEnding Story

Kotaku notes that although it is easy to take a look at the trailer and assume that Digital Extremes "have been playing too many Souls, Sinclair pointed out that they took a lot of inspiration for the world itself from The NeverEnding Story and Princess Mononoke with the game's world being a little bit angrier regarding what has happened to it.

This means that the grounds underneath "tend to shift throughout the day" which would then generate access to certain places just like caves. The new game is also expected to have a large, open-world hub that would serve as "Soulframe's" overworld.

Sinclair also added that the game will be giving greater focus on exploration. The director told the Post that "I'm chasing that short session but high immersion thing where you sign in and come out of your yurt and you are where you last signed off but the world feels like it's been going on without you."
