Starting Wednesday, July 13, you can post comments or reply with a GIF. This new feature will be available for any safe-for-work and non-quarantined subreddit.

Reddit Adds GIF Feature

The GIFs are from Giphy's moderated collection, so it is not free for all users, but Giphy offers a lot of animated options to choose from. Any SFW subreddits will need to opt-out of the GIF feature if they want to keep it turned off.

Reddit admin u/ChocotiniPlease wrote in a post that they've decided to make GIFs available to all communities due to popular demand.

The company has also decided to make other features available that it previously hid behind its pay gate, a change that the company noted last week under the r/modnews subreddit.

GIF comments were previously available through Powerups, the company's version of Discord's server Boosts.

Other Powerups included special options for paid subreddit supports, custom emojis, and support for videos of up to 1080p in quality.

Reddit admin u/pl00h wrote in a post that the company has concluded that a couple of Powerups features are popular and should be made widely available to the communities and users.

According to CNET, the admin also posted that Reddit has come to the conclusion that bundling the features into subscription product is not scalable or a good fit for most of the communities.

The Verge reported that Reddit observed that GIFs in comments and custom emojis both proved popular among the users. Still, some of this stuff is stuck behind the requirement for a community to collect 25 Powerups for $4.99 each.

Reddit NFT Avatar Marketplace

Aside from GIFs, Reddit also launched a new NFT-based avatar marketplace that allows users to purchase blockchain-based profile pictures for a cost.

The company stated that users do not need to have a crypto wallet to purchase them, they need their debit or credit card, and they can also use the company's own wallet product to store them.

According to TechCrunch, Reddit is also releasing 90 designs, with the total amount of NFTs going for sale in the early-access phase being "tens of thousands."

The company also noted that if you buy one of its limited-edition NFTs, you will have the licensing rights to use it on and off Reddit as an avatar.

However, these rights are not as extensive as owning an NFT from Yuga Labs' Bored Ape Yacht Club collection, which lets you make merchandise or TV shows based on your bored ape.

Also, you can mix and match your avatar's look with merch available in the avatar builder, and the avatar will have a glow effect right next to your comments in subreddit communities.

This is not Reddit's first time dipping its toes in the NFTs. In early 2022, the company started testing a feature that would allow you to set any Ethereum-based NFT as your profile picture weeks after Twitter released the same feature.
