E-Bikes Found to be Leading the Shift When It Comes to Electric Vehicles

According to the story by Electrek, when some people think about the term "electric vehicles," they often think about certain mental images of Teslas or other types of headline-grabbing electric cars. Although some people would assume that electric cars are more popular, a recent study was made showing e-bikes are actually leading the transportation shift towards the use of EVs.

A new German study coming from Deloitte was able to show that e-bikes or electric bicycles are actually leading the shift towards the use of electric vehicles for electric transportation. The study was reportedly conducted in June with a little over a thousand respondents.

Survey Found 18% of Participants Using e-Bikes While Only 7% Used e-Cars

The respondents provided feedback regarding whether they use electric transportation and which type of electric transportation they use. As per the study, the largest portion of the survey sample said that 18% of them used e-bikes for commuting.

The study found out that within their sample size, only 7% of them actually used electric cars which is the same percentage for those using electric scooters. It was also found that electric mopeds made up 3%, electric motorcycles made up 2%, and electric micro-mobiles just consisted up 1% of the sample.

Study Found that e-Bikes were Perceived as More Attractive Compared to e-Cars

The study suggests that a major reason behind the high use of electric bicycles could be the "higher perceived attractiveness of the electric two-wheelers." In order to determine the level of attractiveness of each particular form of the electric vehicle, the study also asked respondents to rate the attractiveness of the different modes of electric transportation.

Participants had to rate the different modes with a 1 being very unattractive up to 4 which signified that the mode is very attractive. Electric bicycles, once again, came out on top of the survey.

The study also investigated further in order to determine why the respondents decided to rank certain types of vehicles with the highest attractiveness. According to BloombergNEF, in 2021, Americans saw 652,000 electric cars and plug-in hybrids imported compared to the 790,000 electric bikes.
