Death of Photography? DALL-E 2 AI Sharpens A Blurry Image Based on Photographer’s Experiment

In order to sharpen a fuzzy image, a photographer employed OpenAI's DALL-E 2, an artificial intelligence program that can produce lifelike photographs from just a brief description.

Surprisingly, the image became even more focused and sharper!

Death of Photography?

YouTuber Michael Widell received the clip edited with DALL-E 2 from Nicholas Sherlock. Widell was so impressed by the technology's potential that he even questioned whether it would lead to the "death of photography."

Images from Sherlock reveal a blurry ladybug that OpenAI's technology has magically improved. In order to correct the picture, he removed the ladybug's fuzzy portion and added the caption "Ladybug on a leaf, stacked hi-res macro shot."

How Did DALL-E 2 Improve the Image's Quality?

This clever technique uses DALL-E 2 for a purpose for which it was not intended, but it might end up being a significant and effective tool for photographers who want to improve the quality of their captured images.

In an interview with PetaPixel, Sherlock provided yet another illustration of a photograph he altered on DALL-E 2, this one featuring an egret found in a drainage canal.

According to Sherlock, DALL-inpainting E's feature enables the user to input an image, use a brush to remove a portion of it, then instruct the AI application on what should be painted in the photo.

Sherlock provided PetaPixel with an example of a tilt-shift photo where he desired a "slightly looser" crop, this technique is called "outpaint."

Sherlock increased the canvas's size in Photoshop and added some translucent borders before uploading the finished product to DALL-E. In order to match the original image, he instructed the software to fill in the image with the phrase "A town in autumn, 35mm tilt-shift photography, Velvia."

Sherlock also shared a comparison image made with Photoshop's Content-Aware-Fill tool, although PetaPixel noted that it should come as no surprise that it was unable to produce a scene that was significantly broader than the image DALL-E produced.

Is DALL- E 2 Available to the Public?

According to DALL-E 2's website, the research project is still not publicly available in the team's API. The team said that they want to produce and roll out AI "responsibly," so they're currently studying the project's "limitations and capabilities" with a small group of users.

OpenAI noted that not all invitations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

"We may choose to prioritize individuals based on other criteria to better meet the needs of our learning goals or distribute load across time zones," OpenAI wrote on their website.
