Apple has seen a lot of success with the AirTag 1, and like most of its other offerings, the company might want to ride its success and release a follow-up model to its popular trackers. There are certain conditions to be followed, however, if Apple is to create the AirTag 2.
Apple Could Launch an AirTag 2 Depending on the Performance of the AirTag 1
The development of the AirTag 2 depends entirely on the AirTag 1. Since its launching in April 2021, as per Apple, the AirTag has been widely used and the highlight of both positive and negative news.
The article notes that since its launch, there hasn't been much news regarding whether there will be a new version of the device to come. As with a lot of products, however, this hasn't stopped leakers when it comes to finding information about new products.
Analyst Says Sales of the AirTag 1 Need to First Improve Before the Company Launches a Second Generation Version
One of the most well-respected Apple analysts, Ming-Chi Kuo, the AirTag hasn't received that much attention, and its shipments were only able to reach about 20 to 35 million units in 2021 and 2022.
According to the story by Tech Radar, the analyst, however, believes that if the shipments continue to grow, the company could be developing a 2nd generation of the device. This, however, is according to belief and without actual data to present just yet.
Why Does the AirTag 1 Sales have to Increase for There to be an AirTag 2
As per Kuo, the Apple AirTag 2 could only happen if there is a significant increase in sales of the initial AirTag. Apple is still waiting to see just how popular the product becomes over time, and it could be too early to tell whether a second-generation AirTag is needed.
From a business perspective, it makes sense for Apple to first assess the demand for the tracking devices before deciding to release another one. As of press time, it is still way too early to tell whether the demand for the Apple AirTag is enough to merit a second generation.

Second Generation AirTag Could Happen but There are No Promises
Fans might have to wait for a while before Apple decides that the data it has collected is enough for them to make a decision to launch an AirTag 2. There is also no specific estimation as to how long it could take before the company decides to launch a second-generation version of the AirTags.
From the 20 million in 2021 to 35 million in 2021, Apple has seen a growth in its AirTags, but this number might not be sufficient for the company to decide to release a second-generation version. This could be due to the fact that since the AirTags are not too expensive, the company would have to make more shipments in order to see significant profits enough for them to think about developing a second-generation version.
