A TikTok executive is trying to make it clear that the app is not a social network platform but rather an entertainment platform. The executive says they specialize in entertainment and not social media.
TikTok Executive Tries to Explain the Difference Between Them and Facebook
According to the story by CNBC, TikTok is very aware that Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, is retooling both Facebook and Instagram apps to adapt the short video content. The company, on the other hand, says that they have no plans to mimic Facebook.
TikTok's president of global business solutions, Blake Chandlee, gave a statement to CNBC saying that "Facebook is a social platform." The executive then stated that their competitor's algorithms were more based on the social graph while theirs is not.
Chandlee Worked at Facebook for 12 Years Before Joining TikTok
Chandlee actually spent a long 12 years working at Facebook before deciding to join TikTok back in 2019. He noted that his former employer will "likely run into trouble if it tries to copy TikTok" and ends up offering an inferior experience to both its users and brands.
Back in 2020, Facebook decided to launch Instagram Reels which offered almost the same experience as TikTok. In 2021, as per Social Media Today, the company decided to bring the experience to its main Facebook app.
Meta Stock is Down by More Than Half This Year
Tom Alison, the app chief of Facebook, told The Verge that he is seeing TikTok stealing shares from the largest social network in the world. The company is now planning to modify its primary feed in order to give a more TikTok-like appeal by recommending similar content regardless of whether it is being shared by friends or not.
As per Alison, they think that the thing they weren't able to fully embrace or see is basically how social the format used by TikTok could be. This can be seen as Meta's stock price is down by a whopping 52% this year while the Nasdaq has only dropped by 32%.
TikTok Executive Compares the Situation to When Google Tried to Take on Facebook
In April, the company announced its revenue in the second quarter could also drop from a year earlier. This would be the first time that the company has seen this significant drop in revenue.
Unlike Facebook, TikTok is privately held by ByteDance, a Chinese company. Chandlee noted that history isn't really on the side of Mark Zuckerberg and is comparing the problem at hand to when Google tried to take on Facebook.

Google Wasn't Able to Take on Facebook in the Social Media Aspect
Despite Google having more money, they still weren't able to compete with Facebook. Chandlee then said that "it became clear Google's value was search and Facebook was really good at social."
He then added that TikTok is good at bringing cultural trends and a unique experience to people.
