The FDA has approved technology that helps track Parkinson's disease for Apple Watch users. The approval was given to Rune Labs' StrivePD to help measure certain indicators to help track the disease.
New Apple Watch App for People with Parkinson's Gets FDA Approval
According to the story by PC Mag, a new Apple Watch app just received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The app works on collecting patient symptom data for Parkinson's disease.
Rune Labs is the San Francisco-based startup behind the technology. The StrivePD platform draws technology directly from the Movement Disorder API, which allows the app to measure and record "tremors and involuntary motions" that are most common in people who have Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's Disease was Diagnosed in Actor Michael J. Fox
As per the article, one of the reasons why the brain disorder is so popular is because it was diagnosed in Michael J. Fox, the actor. Parkinson's disease causes "unintended or uncontrollable movements," which often result in someone's ability to talk or walk being affected.
Although its true origin remains unknown, both clinical diagnosis and treatment are mostly based on certain noticeable warning signs. The warning signs include dyskinesia, tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement, and even poor balance.
Creator of the App Shares How StrivePD Helps Those With Parkinson's
Aura Oslapas, the creator of the app, released a statement sharing how the StrivePD will help track symptoms and improvements, which in turn results in "an optimal medication schedule." The creator used their own experience with the disease to create a program purchased in 2019 by Rune Labs.
Although Rune Labs didn't initially come up with the technology, since they bought it, they were still able to make improvements leading up to the FDA's approval of the technology. The technology helps track whether a person has made improvements or if their situation has worsened.
App Aims to Provide Clinicians and Researchers with Better Data
Most of the time, clinicians and researchers often make "patient-care decisions based on limited information." The goal of the technology is to help provide the necessary information for these medical professionals to make better decisions when it comes to dealing with the disease.
As per Rune Labs, their goal is to help "radically transform what it means to be a patient with Parkinson's" by creating more visibility regarding data. The availability of data could help accelerate treatment and drug development when it comes to the disease.

Apple Watch StrivePD Aims to Bring In Both Qualitative and Quantitative Data
According to Oslapas, StrivePD's availability on the Apple Watch is a union of both qualitative and quantitative data that was long-awaited by people who had Parkinson's disease. To add, the data will help encourage better communication and care between patients and clinicians.
Another important benefit of the app mentioned by Oslapas is that it will help empower people suffering from Parkinson's disease.
