The highly anticipated sequel to 2018's God of War is supposedly gearing up for a 2022 release if Bloomberg's Jason Schreier and his three sources are to be believed. In an article published on June 10, Schreier debunks previous reports of a delay by stating that the God of War Ragnarok release date is now officially planned for November 2022. Schreier also notes that Sony's PlayStation is set to announce the news "later this month."

With Summer Game Fest debuting with some incredible hype on June 9, many had expected PlayStation to showcase the God of War sequel amid the show, as little to no information had been released in the past several months. While no official news did drop on God of War Ragnarok, Sony itself did unintentionally leak its own The Last of Us PlayStation 5 remake and likewise announced the forthcoming release of a Last of Us standalone multiplayer game.

God of War Ragnarok, on the other hand, was sidelined and remained in the dark in terms of what fans can expect from the experience narratively. The sequel first made head waves back in Sept. 2020, when PlayStation released the rather simple God of War Ragnarok teaser trailer, which featured nothing but a stylized title screen. More info would be revealed a year later during a PlayStation Showcase revealing a full three minutes of God of War Ragnarok content. It is set to release on both PS4 and PS5.

According to Schreier, the experience has been delayed quite a bit "both publicly and internally," which is due to issues surrounding both the pandemic and "other production challenges." At the beginning of 2022, the God of War Ragnarok release date was bound for September but later pushed back to November, news of which may have caused the recent stir in reports that the game would not debut until 2023.

God of War Ragnarok is set to be among PlayStation's major pillars for the year, saddled up alongside the recently released Horizon Forbidden West. Its predecessor, 2018's God of War, has sold a whopping 19.5 million units as of August of last year and officially debuted on PC in Jan. to some stellar fanfare. The God of War games remain instant PlayStation classics and are a hallmark of the brand, with total franchise estimated sales numbers reaching over 51 million as of 2020.

Still, despite Schreier's incredible sources and knowledge of the gaming industry, he does make a point to note in his conclusion that "No dates are certain in the turbulent world of game development." Any form of God of War delay would certainly set the fandom on fire, but it's imperative to keep in mind just how volatile these current times are as many similarly situated experiences see new dates being applied consistently, most prominent among them being the delay of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.
