Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the sequel to 2019's modernized retelling of the classic video game that was first released all the way back in 2007, finally received an official trailer showcasing all the awesome specs fans can expect of the next military action outing. Infinity Ward details within the Modern Warfare 2 reveal that the game will not only have its own mainline singleplayer iteration, which will pick up from where its predecessor left off, but will also have its own tactical co-op mode in the guise of Spec Ops from the Modern Warfare series' first three releases.
Traditional multiplayer will, of course, be making a strong comeback in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, witnessed in two varied formats: smaller six versus six matches and more large-scale maps. Infinity Ward explained that work on Call of Duty: Warzone's large-scale Verdansk map aided in its approach to the larger, Ground War-esque locales players can expect in the Modern Warfare sequel.
The team also described its upcoming take on the co-op formula as "an evolved special ops game mode featuring tactical co-op gameplay." Not much else is known about the mode, but if it's anything like previous takes, it's sure to excite, featuring specific goals set on small to medium scale maps that a lot stars in accordance to the player's kills, completion time, and more.

It was announced in late 2021 that Infinity Ward would be replacing Spec Ops with a Hazard Zone-like mode, but it's clear the developer is taking its co-op formula in the right direction. As for the game's single-player aspect, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be picking up with "the newly formed Task Force 141," which will be tackling yet another globetrotting adventure "to neutralize a terrorist conspiracy and attack on the US."
In Call of Duty fashion, iconic characters will be making their fated return in the sequel, including the likes of Laswell, Ghost, Soap, and the infamous cigar-toting Captain Price. New character allies and villains will also be making their debut in the game, yet Infinity Ward remained tight-lipped on names, besides showcasing Colonel Alejandro Vargas of the Mexican Special Forces.
At the culmination of the Modern Warfare 2 reveal, Activision likewise announced the coming release of Call of Duty: Warzone on mobile, which is set to be "a new era" for the franchise, according to the publisher. Activision also stated that the new mobile Warzone iteration will maintain the same engine across Modern Warfare 2, as well as even into the next installment of the battle royale game, which will launch following Modern Warfare 2's release in October. Warzone 2.0 will also be set within "the Modern Warfare II universe."
'In order to deliver this state-of-the-art experience, Warzone 2.0 will feature new Modern Warfare II content and systems with brand new progression and inventories," Activision's statement reads. "Today's Warzone will continue on as a separate experience that will include a continuation of player progression and inventories within that Warzone experience."
While highly exciting for fans and gamers alike, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 comes with its own various headaches in the form of current events. With both American gun control and the still-ongoing Ukraine invasion, not to mention Activision Blizzard's own elongated list of lawsuits, the Modern Warfare 2 release date comes at a rather heavy time, which the studio ensured to touch upon in a pre-reveal announcement.
"We're telling fictional stories. But it is inspired by real-world military events that shape the world we live in," explains Patrick Kelly, Infinity Ward co-studio head. "This is a sensitive one for me because with the events going on in the world, the war in Ukraine, it's important to me that we be sensitive on this one."
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will release in full on Oct. 28 for PS4/PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC from Activision Blizzard's own launcher, Battle.net, and Steam, the first for the publisher in many years. More gameplay, specifically of the Call of Duty sequel's campaign, will also be shown off amid Summer Game Fest tomorrow. For those who preorder the game now, an early access open beta will be made available, with more details slated for reveal "in the coming weeks."
