Apple 3nm M2 Pro Mass Production by TSMC to Start Later This Year

TSMC will be starting mass production for Apple's 3nm M2 Pro chips starting later this year. After unveiling the M2-powered MacBooks, the Taiwanese semiconductor company will now be ramping up its efforts in order to manufacture the chips in larger quantities.

Apple has Just Unveiled Its Newest M2 Chips

According to the story by 9to5Mac, Apple has finally unveiled its newest M2 chips. This will be the first type of Silicon chips that will be specifically created for both the Mac and iPad.

A previous article by the Business Standard noted that Apple is expected to launch the newest iPad Pro with the 3nm M2 chipset. Although this article was released in January of this year, an analyst says that TSMC could be using the 3nm process for the M2 Pro chips.

TSMC to Start Mass Production of Its Latest M2 Pro Chips

Although the M2-powered MacBooks have not yet hit the stores, Haitong Intl Tech Research analyst Jeff Pu says that TSMC, one of the most popular suppliers for Apple, will start mass production for its more recent M2 Pro chips later this year.

As per the analyst, Apple will continue to tap TSMC as the supplier for its Apple Silicon chips. The company is expected to start mass production of the M2 Pro chips later this year and they are expected to be built on the 3-nanometer process.

M2 Chips Capable of 18% Faster CPU Performance Compared to the M1

To be more clear, "the scale of a chip in nanometer represents the distance between its transistors." To add, this means that the smaller the distance between the transistors, the better the performance will be.

Despite a lot of enhancements with the new Apple Silicon M2 chip, it is still reportedly built on the same 5nm process as its previous chip, the M1. As per Apple, the M2 chips are capable of 18% faster CPU performance compared to the M1.

M2 Pro Chips Reportedly Capable of Up to 24GB of RAM

The newer chips are also capable of 35% better graphics due to their brand new 10-core GPU. The M2 is also capable of offering all the way up to 24GB of RAM in comparison to the M1 which was only capable of offering 8GB and 16GB worth of RAM.

Apple recently announced that it has been working on a brand new M2 Pro and Mac mini chip. The company has also been developing chips that are reportedly even more powerful when compared to the long-awaited Apple Silicon Mac Pro.

Should the report of Pu really be correct, the high-end version of the M2 chip, the M2 Pro will be built on the newer 3nm process. An article by WCCFTech noted that they are happy to know that the new technology could be used to leverage mass production of the "unnamed SoC found in Apple's highly rumored AR headset."
