Google Assistant Removes Features: A Move to Make Way for Memory?

Google Assistant users may have to say goodbye to its ability to set reminders for them. The tech giant announced that they will get rid of location-based reminders and the ability to assign reminders to a specific person.

However, there is no explanation for why Google is removing this handy feature. It is also unclear when these features will cease to exist for everyone. Some users have started noticing the change.

Memory Feature As Replacement

The recent news brought on speculations that the move is to prepare for the future rollout of a new feature "Memory." The feature was spotted early last year that allows users to save on-screen content, reminders, etc.

Although Assistant already has a Memory feature for saving information, the new "version" seems to be a major upgrade that will likely integrate with the "Collections" feature and may be on the main menu bar alongside the daily snapshot view of Assistant.

The idea behind this is to allow users to save almost anything and let them search, sort, and revisit everything they have saved. Depending on what users will save, Memory will also include contextual information.

Still, there is no release date yet for Memory, and is still being tested. A statement from a Google spokesperson said, "We are constantly iterating and experimenting with new ways to improve the user experience, but we have no further details to share at this time."

Should it be the reason the reminder feature of Google Assistant is going away, and it makes a lot of sense for Google to take that route.

Personalized Speech Recognition

There is also an upcoming feature called Personalized Speech Recognition that will help Google Assistant be better at recognizing frequent names and words. It seems that the feature will expand machine learning-based improvements beyond "Hey Google" to actual Assistant commands.

On other devices like Mini and 2nd-gen Nest Hub, Google is already using a machine learning chip that processes most common local queries to deliver a much faster response time. However, it's unclear when this will launch and how much of an improvement it will have.

This comes as the tech giant at 1/O 2022 provided a preview of how conversations with Assistant next year will become more natural.

Indeed, Google Assistant has a few features coming up that could improve user experience. However, due to the lack of details, many users are still confused about these new features, particularly Google Assistant's ability to set reminders.

Users will only have to sit back and wait for new details to roll out. As of now, with some users who are also experiencing the latest changes to Assistant, it won't be too long before it gets rolled out to all users.
