The more technology progresses, the higher the demand becomes for higher storage systems. With that, Toshiba is revealing its new SMR hard drive, which is a 2TB external storage that is capable of high performance.
Toshiba has Just Revealed Its P300 SMR HDD
While most computer users usually prefer using SSD storage, Toshiba is announcing its brand new HDD offering. The new storage will be a 3.5-inch P300 Desktop PC Hard Drive.
According to the story by Tech Radar, Toshiba designed the new release aiming at graphic designers as well as creative professionals that are looking for not just a lot of storage but also high performance.
New HDD Will be Available with Up to 6TB in Storage Capacity
Variations of the HDD will be released with storage capacities reaching up to 6TB. As per the company, the new HDD is designed in order for it to be useful in workstations as well as gaming PCs.
The main goal is for the new SMR HDD to be an appealing enough alternative to the usually more expensive SSDs. The new hard drive is reportedly adopting a technology called shingled magnetic recording (SMR).
SMR HDD as an Alternative to SSD Technology
This is an alternative technology to SSDs that has actually been in existence ever since 2015, seven years ago, as also noted by ZDNet. The shingled recording will be able to create new tracks that overlap with certain parts of the "previously written magnetic tracks.
Basically, the technology works like shingles on a roof and is capable of higher track density when used. In order to prevent loss of data, the design of the P300 will also include an internal shock center.
The HDD will also be featuring ramp loading technology. This means when users' hard drives or PCs are being transported, the drive slider won't be in contact with the disk resulting in a lesser risk of wearing or even worse, data loss.
When it comes to speed and performance, Toshiba's P300 SMR is capable of buffering up to 256MB and 5,400 rpm to 7,200 rpm at rotational speeds. For those looking for more efficient power usage, the drive's consumption will range from 4.11 W to 7.3 W.

Toshiba's Hardware Division to Become a Separate Operation
Toshiba's upcoming SMR HDD will only be 680g and 450g depending on how much storage customers plan to buy. As for its release date, the new drives are expected to come out sometime during the third quarter of this year.
The release of Toshiba's new HDD comes just shortly after it had announced certain decisions regarding its hardware division to become a separate operation. With the hardware division becoming its own entity, the company aims to focus more and more on computer technology among others.
