Google Chat Rolls Out New Security Features

Google has announced several security measures during the 2022 I/O Developer Conference, including features for Google Chat.

Google Chat is the new Hangouts, and with the rising cases of cyberattacks, the company updated its security features to ensure users are protected continually.

Google Chat will now have display banners that will warn users against potential phishing and malware attacks from personal accounts. The label will say, "This invite is suspicious," and will continue with, "This conversation contains links to known phishing sites that may try to steal your information."

Users will get the option to block the conversation or accept anyway if confident that the material is safe.

Additionally, there will be other plans for security measures, including two-step verification, ad customization, and data security.

The new Google Chat feature is expected to be rolled out to all users over the next couple of weeks and will be available for personal Google accounts and Google Workspace customers.

Google's Warning Banners

This is not the first time Google users will see these warning banners. They were first introduced in Gmail on Workspace accounts that enable users to distinguish malware, phishing, or ransomware.

By the end of April 2022, the banners were introduced to Google Docs, which notifies users about suspected malicious files in several Google Workspace apps, such as Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Drawing, regardless of where the link was opened from.

Privacy Remains a Top Priority for Google

Jen Fitzpatrick, Google's SVP for core systems and experiences, emphasized the concept of "protected computing" that represents the tech giant's new approach to where and how data is processed.

The changes justify the trust people have in Google to keep them secure. "Protecting your privacy requires us to be rigorous in building products that are private by design," she said.

The company's safety announcements strongly represent its drive and desire to prioritize users' security concerns despite the rise of innovative features that are coming out. It's good to see that privacy remains a priority for Google.

Google Chat is Google's 'Slack'

Google Chat allows users to chat together without formalities. Once the conversation is made, it will be deleted after five days for those who are using a personal account.

It also features 'Space,' which allows for more long-term conversations. Every space has its own name where users can share files. Basically, Google Chat Space is best for work projects and other activities that require ongoing conversations over the course of days or longer.

To use Google Chat, you need to activate it for your Gmail account.
