‘Vaxinia’ Cancer-Killing Virus is Now Starting its Human Trials, Aims to Remove Infected Cells

A team of medical researchers found a way to kill cancer cells in the body, but its initial trials looked into animals and did experiments on them, wherein they succeeded. Now, the team is looking into their move to experimental trials for humans, and it aims to remove cancer from the body, with the virus that it developed.

According to a press release by City of Hope National Medical Center in California, it teamed up with Imugene Limited to create a drug called "Vaxinia," or the CF33-hNIS virus. It borders on the use of a novel CD19-expressing oncolytic virus from City of Hope that aims to target solid tumors in the body and rid of its drastic effects.

Cancers that metastasize into tumors are in their worst case already, and it brings drastic health effects to the public for the many risks and dangers it poses. Now, the virus would intend to remove the tumor from within, without the use of chemotherapy, and borders on the treatment developed by City of Hope for patients.

The City of Hope initially used chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapies to cure patients of cancer, but it is not going to cut it fully.

Vaxinia's Human Trials Starting Soon

According to Gizmodo, the City of Hope and Imugene Limited already dosed its first patient with the cancer-killing virus, and it is the first experimental human trial they did with the drug. Soon is more to follow, and it will look into the healing properties that it brings and promises for a patient.

If it goes well, more patients are on the way to receiving the drug and focus on its licensing for its use.

Cancer and its Treatment

The answer to COVID-19 with vaccines and its many experimental treatments came in fast, and now, the world is focusing on other health issues to fix during this time. The fast progression of medicine is giving the world hope towards focusing its efforts on other ailments and diseases, and it includes cancer and HIV for those affected.

There is no downright cure to cancer yet, but there is a thing called chemotherapy that aims to kill cancer cells in the body through radiation that results in hair loss. Blood transfusion is also something that doctors do to prevent blood loss through cancer operations.

A medical wearable from Luminate Medical helps in avoiding hair loss for the cancer patients that undergo the therapy.

Cancer is a disease that many people suffer from since the early days, and most go undetected as they manifest on cells that remain unseen by the naked eye, and are happening without symptoms in some cases. Now, there is hope for everyone, and it focuses on a drug that will help kill cancer cells using a virus, but it is still in an early experimental phase.
