Sony is giving customers 10 percent off when purchasing PlayStation products through the network's online store. Moreover, the company is giving an extension to the subscription of its paying customers.
Sony wanted to make up for the disruption of its services during the Christmas holidays. As reported previously in TechTimes, the PlayStation Network went down on Christmas Day due to a series of DDoS attacks.
The group called Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for all the attacks. Other people described the incident as a case of hacking.
However, the PlayStation Network case seemed to be a more serious affair.
"A DDos attack happens when a server gets hit with an overwhelming number of external communications requests and messages, which causes the server to overload. Basically, this disrupts communications from the target computer, essentially shutting down the service it offers, in this case, the PlayStation Network," reported TechTimes.
Sony understands how the attack affected its subscribers from accessing the network's content and services. As a way to compensate, the company is giving an extension to their subscription.
"PS Plus members impacted by the PSN service interruption over the holidays, we have started to roll out the 5-day PS Plus membership extension, no action is required on your part, " said Eric Lempel, VP of Sony Network Entertainment. "You will receive an email in the coming days with a confirmation of details about the extension."
As for the 10 percent price cut, Sony will be rolling it out during the coming weekend, from Jan. 23 to 26. The code redemption and transaction should be completed at least before 9 a.m. on Jan. 26.
"The discount will be valid from 9:00 AM 1/23 PST through 9:00 AM PST 1/26. Simply use the promotion code for a one-time 10 percent discount off eligible items in a total cart purchase in PlayStation Store on PS3, PS4 or the web/mobile at store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com. Some exclusions do apply, including subscriptions for PS Plus, Music Unlimited, PS Now and rental video content. The code must be redeemed at checkout and discounted transaction completed before 1/26/15 at 9:00 AM," said Lempel.
There are hundreds of thousands of discounted items that users can take advantage of with the offer. These include pre-orders, season passes, game add-ons, award winning indie titles, blockbuster new releases and a huge selection of TV shows and movies. Users are advised to watch out for the code on the PlayStation Store and @PlayStation.
As always, the announcement of Sony gained mixed reactions from PlayStation users.
"Perfect. Was waiting for this so I can pick up Drive Club. I hear all the issues have been fixed, so looking forward to the game. Thanks Guys," said one user known as msccomp.
Others were not as happy.
"This makes me upset more than anything else. You guys put an expiration date on the 10 percent off which is completely bull. We should get a 10 percent code and use it when we want," said iXi_LAWM9STER.
