In a tweet posted on Thursday, May 12, billionaire Elon Musk has once again said that the former U.S. president and Twitter banned user Donald Trump should be given the chance to come back in the bird app.
Welcome back, Trump
Twitter will be welcoming the return of Trump very soon, the news broke fire and left people enraged since the former president was banned after the Capital Riot on January 6.
The bird app cited that he violated their rules against violent incitement and Trump's tweets have also been subject to various fact-checking when he was still active on the social app.
"Even though I think a less divisive candidate would be better in 2024, I still think Trump should be restored to Twitter," Musk affirmed.
Mehdi Hasan, journalist and host of The Mehdi Hasan Show, replied via a quoted tweet saying, "And when he incites another deadly insurrection on your platform, what will you do then?
Hasan was referring to Trump's tweet in January of last year that reads, "The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!"
This tweet served as a deciding factor for the bird app to issue a permanent suspension on the former president.
Musk's Defense
During his recent interview with the Financial Times, he stated that Twitter should lift Trump's permanent ban and claimed that it was "morally wrong" for the platform to issue the suspension.
He also said that it was a "mistake" citing the reason that it "alienated" a large part of the country and did not exactly result to Trump not having a voice.
However, he also explained in the interview that there would be no special treatment for the former president or anyone on Twitter. This was only in line of his staunch belief in free speech and that the platform should be open for the far right and far left to make a neutral ground.
Musk also noted that if Trump cites violence again with his tweets, he will be suspended. Jack Dorsey, Twitter's co-founder and former CEO, actually agreed with Musk and said that the permanent bans were a "failure" and should never be issued again.
It is worth noting that Musk and Trump have no history of business association, except when Trump once supported NASA and SpaceX's collaboration.
The new Twitter owner assured that permanent bans during his era will be "extremely rare" and will only be issued to spam accounts or bots.
