U.S.-based experts are now concerned regarding the spread of ticks in the United States. They warn the public regarding these arachnids since they can bring new deadly diseases.
Ticks are commonly found in dogs, which are among the most popular pets in the United States. For the past few years, these parasites have been troubling health experts since there's now a nationwide monitoring system that is efficient in detecting them.
This means that the U.S. still can't identify where ticks exist, the diseases they carry, as well as their how they travel from one host to another.
U.S. Experts Now Concern About Ticks
According to The Wired's latest report, ticks are complex parasites. They can survive by just drinking the blood of their animal or human hosts.
After feeding, their bites can carry great amounts of pathogens. As of writing, health experts said that these arachnids are expanding into new areas and carrying different diseases.
CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) confirmed that 16 different illnesses are caused by tick bites.
Richard Ostfeld, a tick expert at the independent Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies in New York State, said that having an efficient monitoring system is important.
"And if you know where the ticks and tick-borne pathogens are, you can do a decent job of predicting where they will be soon and get out in front with campaigns of education and awareness," he explained.
How To Avoid Ticks?
CDC's official blog post explained how people can avoid ticks. Here are some of the health tips you can follow:
- Avoid walking in grassy, bushy, and wooded areas since these are the places where ticks are usually hiding. If you really need to walk there, then you should wear boots and long pants.
- After going into the mentioned areas, don't forget to wash the gears you wore using cleaning products with around 0.5% permethrin.
- On the other hand, you should also check your body (under the arms, between the legs, around the ears, etc.) since ticks can hide in tight places.
