In an email sent to employees recently, company CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky has mentioned that they will never require people to return to the office if they don't want to. Ever. According to a report by CNN, Chesky made it clear that working from home will be part of the company's new policies and expectations moving forward.

But that's not the only thing he mentioned. AirBnB employees also don't have to worry about their pay getting docked, as opting for remote work will not negatively impact their salaries. There will also be no salary adjustments in case an employee decides to move somewhere else, where the cost of living could be lower.

The company posted this massive announcement on their official newsroom. As per the post, AirBnB noticed how there's an increase in the number of people just relocating to wherever they want, whenever they want. This has made folks "untethered" from the office, which is why the company is making the major change.

In the post, the company shared the five basic features of their new work from home forever policy:

  • Employees can choose to work from home or at the office

  • Employees can move to anywhere in the country they work in without their compensation changing

  • Employees now have the flexibility to travel and work wherever they are in the world

  • There will be regular meetups for activities like team gatherings, social events, and off-sites

  • The company will continue working "in a highly coordinated way."

As per Chesky, this decision will allow AirBnB to "hire and retain the best people in the world." It will also broaden their hiring prospects from just those who are within commuting distance from the office. With this, the company's workforce can grow even bigger from its current estimate of 6,000 all over the globe.

Is Remote Work Really The Future?

Obviously, the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic have forced employers all over the world to adapt. For safety reasons, they were no longer able to require employees to come to the office.

But fast-forward two years, and people have basically gotten used to the idea of working from home. Aside from not having to commute, it was also found that there was barely any difference in terms of productivity between the two different working arrangements. Most of the time, working from home was beneficial to employees in so many circumstances.

In 2021, Owl Labs reports that after surveying several people who worked from home during the pandemic, they found out that 70 percent of these folks found virtual meetings less stressful.

With less stress comes better productivity too. According to ApolloTechnical, people who worked remotely spend an average of 10 fewer minutes a day doing nothing, work a day more every week, and are almost 50% more productive overall.

It is still not as widespread of a pronouncement, but AirBnB is setting a precedent that companies like them (tech companies especially) can live and benefit more from home-based arrangements in the long run.
