Some Classic 'Elder Scrolls' Games Are Free On Steam Right Now

"Elder Scrolls" is basically what made Bethesda a household name. And after announcing some changes to their business model earlier this year, the studio has made some of their classic "Elder Scrolls" titles free on Steam right now.

The aforementioned free games from the classic franchise on Valve's storefront are as follows:

  • "The Elder Scrolls Arena"

  • "The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall"

But aside from these classic "Elder Scrolls" games, there's also "Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory" up for grabs. So all in all, these titles can be had for free if you want them as a result of Bethesda shutting down its official launcher. With the shutdown of its launcher and proprietary storefront, Bethesda is listing its games back on Steam, writes PCGamer.

Two other games from the list aren't free, but they're still pretty dirt cheap. These are "The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard," and "An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire." You can check them out now on Steam if you want to take a look at which ones you want to get.

To cap things off, there are also the creation kits for "Fallout 4" and "Skyrim Special Edition" to get your hands on. These kits allow you to extensively mod both games, so you can flex your content creation muscles. It is based off of Bethesda's proprietary Creation Engine.

But there's something else you need to do aside from getting those free and dirt-cheap "Elder Scrolls" and "Wolfenstein" games from Steam. Before the launcher officially shuts down on April 27th, you can transfer any games you bought from the launcher to your Steam library.

This also applies to your game saves and everything else left behind in your Bethesda Wallet, the process of which is detailed on Bethesda's website. So you better get to migrating your stuff now before you lose anything important!

Why Is The Bethesda Launcher Shutting Down?

For years, the Bethesda Launcher has been there for "Elder Scrolls," "Fallout," and everything else that the iconic studio has to offer on PC. But earlier this year, they announced that they're ditching it as a preparation for their return to Steam - hence, the freebies.

There weren't any immediate reasons given for the shutdown. Furthermore, the "Elder Scrolls" franchise and other Bethesda games have always been available on Steam in the first place. But the fact that there's still a proprietary launcher that these games need to run is "stupid" according to Kotaku, and has been a pain in the neck for many gamers over the years.

But the studio perhaps did this to try and ensure that players' money goes direct to them. That's because on Steam, Valve takes a 30% cut on every game sale. By having their own launcher, Bethesda also has something they can pit against the likes of EA's Origin and Ubisoft's Ubisoft Connect.

Even so, ScreenRant says that the launcher has been more of a fluff than a useful thing considering its sluggish performance and missing features which Steam has as a standard.
