Instagram Tests 'Templates' Feature: Reels Creation With Borrowed Formats

Instagram is testing out a new feature called "Templates." This new feature lets creators make Reels by borrowing popular video formats from the platform.

Instagram Tests Out TikTok-Like 'Templates' Feature

According to the story by Insider, Instagram is now testing a new feature that will allow users to use already-created video formats from the format, similar to how TikTok will enable users to use popular video formats.

A story from The Verge stated that Instagram's new feature is similar to that of TikTok's, allowing users to use pre-set templates. The templates make it easier for users to create videos by simply dropping their content into a premade sequence and are easily available to its users.

How Instagram's 'Templates' Look Like

Alessandro Paluzzi, a reverse engineer, initially spotted the Templates' early version back in January and posted his findings on Twitter. Another account, Josephine Hill, said that they had already tried the feature out.

Hill posted screenshots on Twitter in March showing how users can easily swap in the frames with their own clips. Users will also be given a chance to add their own audio, like what happens on Instagram Reels.

Instagram's 'Templates' Could Stop Users from Using Third-Party Template Providers

The move by Instagram could hinder users from continuing the use of third-party template providers, just like on Canva. Hill also pointed out to Insider that users will no longer have to watch online tutorials to make a specific format by themselves.

As per a statement by a Meta spokesperson to Insider, the company is always working on different ways to improve their Reels feature, making the content much easier to create. The spokesperson said that the new feature would allow users to use an existing Template to create another Reel.

Meta Spokesperson Says Feature is Being Tested with Small Group of Users

The Meta spokesperson noted that the feature was still being tested out with a smaller group of users. The Verge tried to reach out to Instagram to get a comment from the company but could not immediately receive a response.

The publication notes that Instagram's testing comes when the company tries to make Reels more attractive to creators. The new feature will also help the platform address one of its largest problems when creating videos on the platform.

Instagram Deals with TikTok Reposts

The biggest problem Instagram is dealing with is the popularity of TikTok reposts. In 2021, Instagram announced that they would no longer be promoting Reels that have the iconic watermarks from TikTok.

Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, said that the platform would even downrank the Reels reports. The source added that adding templates will make it easier for users to make Reel videos with pre-made formats.
