Ferrari announced that it would recall thousands of its supercars worldwide, but most of them from China, because of problems with the braking system.
Ferrari Recalls Supercars
The luxury sports carmaker confirmed that it would start the recall on May 30, after announcing the issue in early April, according to SCMP.
Maranello, an Italy-based Ferrari, said in a statement that vehicles involved in this recall campaign are equipped with a brake reservoir fluid cap that may not vent properly. And it could create a vacuum inside the brake fluid reservoir.
The recall involves some of Ferrari's 458 and 488 vehicles. While the carmaker did not provide details on the total number of cars that are involved globally, it is recalling 2,222 vehicles in China alone, warning owners of possible issues with the brakes.
A China recall of that magnitude would amount to almost every car Ferrari sold in the country from 2018 to early 2022, according to Bloomberg.
The carmaker said that it identified the problem by working along with supplier Robert Bosch GmbH. The shares in the company fell 3.3% on the news on Apr. 22, bringing declines for the year to 13%.
The drop on Apr. 22 also makes Ferrari the day's worst performer on the Stoxx 600 Automobiles and Parts Index.
A notice that was posted on the website of China's State Administration for Market Regulation on Apr. 22 said that the recall there covers the 458 Italia, 458 Speciale A, 458 Speciale, 488 Spider, and 488 GTB series cars that were made between March 2, 2010 and March 12, 2019.
According to Ferrari, the vehicles covered by the recall may potentially increase the risk of brake fluid leakage, resulting in reduced braking performance or even brake failure.
The Ferrari website advised owners to drive with caution, to stop immediately, and arrange for towing if the car's low brake fluid level warning light comes on.
Bestinver Securities analyst Andrea Trovarelli wrote in a note that they remind readers that in the FY21, Ferrari shipped around 3,7000 vehicles in APAC, which is around 33% of total shipments.
The development is negative news for the carmaker, but the impact is short-term only.
Ferrari's China division will replace the brake fluid reservoir cap free of charge for cars within the scope of the recall.
Recalls of 458 and 488 Models
This is not the first time Ferrari has recalled its vehicles over potential brake failure, according to CNET.
In November 2021, the carmaker recalled 10,000 of its 458 and 488 car models created between 2009 and 2019 for a potential brake fluid leak, leading to a low brake fluid warning or a complete loss of braking power if not remedied.
The recall covers 2018 to 2015 458 Italia, 2015 458 Speciale A, 2014 to 2015 458 Speciale, the 2012 to 2015 458 Spider, the 2016 to 2019 488 GTB and the 2016 to 2019 488 Spider, for a total of 9,985 cars.
The total 458 productions is estimated at fewer than 25,000 vehicles, and the recall is skewed heavily toward its variants. The number would be smaller if it could pinpoint the exact problem.
In July 2015, Ferrari recalled its vehicles due to a problem with the airbags.
In December 2015, Ferrari recalled its convertibles due to leaks that could lead to a fire.
