Scalper prices are now expanding from popular consoles like the Xbox Series X and PS5 to the Starlink ethernet adapter. The $25 ethernet adapter by Starlink was found bidding up to $499 on eBay with other offers nowhere near its original price.
$25 Starlink Ethernet Adapter Sold as High as $499 on eBay
According to the story by PCMag, the $25 Starlink ethernet adapter can now go as high as $499 on eBay. This was reportedly due to the scarce supply of the important device needed by SpaceX's Starlink users.
Unlike the Xbox Series X or PS5 restock that has been selling for more than a year, SpaceX initially started selling the adapter in November of 2021. The sale of the adapter came with the second-gen Starlink dish introduction.
Compact Size for the Newer Starlink Meant No Ethernet Port
Notable improvements of the newer device include it being in a compact smaller size but being more powerful when it comes to acting as a Wi-Fi modem compared to the dish's first-gen.
The newer version, however, lacks a dedicated Ethernet port which is one of the original dish's popular features. Instead of the ethernet being readily available, SpaceX decided to sell an Ethernet adapter as an accessory for $25 for Starlink subscribers.
Starlink Subscribers Complain About Slow Shipping of the Accessory
The device, however, is extremely difficult to purchase. Due to its rarity, Starlink subscribers have started to complain regarding how the shipping is slow and could even take months before they are able to get the accessory.
Due to the scarcity of this accessory, this has created an opportunity for scalpers to resell the supposedly affordable $25 adapter for much higher prices on eBay. Reddit Starlink page users have started to share their thoughts regarding the situation.
eBay Auctions for Starlink Ethernet Adapter
eBay holds eight Starlink Ethernet adapter auctions with bids starting at $51 and going all the way to $207 as per PCMag. As per eBay's Terapeak tool, however, it can be seen that there have actually been other merchants that were selling the device at much higher prices.
A listing on eBay showed that the adapter was sold for a whopping $499. The site reportedly sold at least 40 adapters with all of them starting at $79 going all the way to $300 in March of this year.
Accessory Just $100 Less than the Dish Itself
PCMag described the scalping situation as a "disappointment," especially since the Starlink dish, which after incurring a recent price hike, was only selling for $599. This means that the highest price of the Starlink accessory is just $100 less from the price of the dish itself.
The official SpaceX store responsible for selling Starlink accessories says that the $25 Ethernet adapter will be "shipped in late April." This means for buyers that need the adapter right away, this leaves little to no choice but to purchase it from a third-party.
