However, it won't be just one, but two remakes on the offer. According to Engadget, both "Max Payne 1" and the iconic "Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne" will be remade for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. But it won't be Rockstar Games who will be handling the remakes of the two games.

Rather, the projects will be helmed by "Alan Wake" developer Remedy Entertainment, who confirmed the projects as much via their official Twitter account:

As per the official press release on Remedy's Investors page, the upcoming "Max Payne" remakes will both be developed by Remedy and published by Rockstar. This is due to the two studios' relationship which dates back to the first launch of the first two games, which has already gained iconic status in gaming and pop culture for its atmosphere, story-telling, and badass "bullet-time" mechanics.

Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser confirmed that Remedy approached them firsthand to pitch the project. They reported that the games, which will be offered as a "single title" for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, will be running on Remedy's very own Northlight Engine.

Northlight is what numerous, visually impressive games like "Control," "Quantum Break," and the newly released "Alan Wake Remastered" are based on. As of this writing, Remedy says that the games are in the concept stage, meaning there's no playable build of it that could leak-yet. There's also no mention of a release date or even a vague release window.

Rockstar Delisting The Old Games?

Since the "Max Payne" remakes have now been confirmed, PCGamer raises the alarm that Rockstar could de-list the original versions once the remakes are out. That's because they already did the same thing with the "GTA Trilogy" remaster.

According to them, this would be a "disappointing" thing for Rockstar to do considering that both "Max Payne" and "Max Payne 2" are two of the most iconic games of the early 2000s. Delisting these games isn't out of the picture since Rockstar infamously took down the OG versions of "San Andreas," "Vice City," and "GTA III" ahead of the release of the remastered trilogy.

Of course, Rockstar had to walk back on its decision after the absolute disaster of a release that was the remastered "GTA Trilogy."

Rockstar Has Its Hands Full For Now

As for why Rockstar themselves isn't handling these remakes, the answer is quite simple: "GTA 6."

The studio notably confirmed that the next "GTA" game is in development after years upon years of rumors-almost a decade after "GTA V" was launched. Considering how big the game is purported to be, it makes sense for Rockstar Games to let Remedy handle the "Max Payne" remakes for the foreseeable future.
