G.M. and Honda may have their own strengths, but these two gigantic vehicle manufacturers have one plan in common as they join forces to develop a lineup of affordable electric vehicles by 2027.
Electric Vehicles in 2022
GM and Honda are no strangers when it comes to embracing the full switch to electric vehicles. In a roster of E.V. competition, G.M. has already lengthened its myriad of products. However, they may not deliver that much this year. Still, while it's the case, it has made major technological advances in electrification that will make it possible to produce E.V.s in large numbers.
Just recently, Electrek reported that the vehicle manufacturer announced they had started production on its Bolt EV and EUV lines again. This operation resumed after being out of commission for more than a year following difficulties with its battery cells.
Meanwhile-although Honda hasn't stepped both their feet in the E.V. industry these past few years yet. It appears the time is near. In fact, Tech Times reported that Honda is collaborating with Sony to produce electric vehicles with advanced camera sensors in 2025. Needless to say, we may not see an E.V. from Honda this or next year.
G.M. and Honda Partnership
Now, interestingly, G.M. and Honda have already crossed paths. Both recently partnered up to work on two new E.V.s about to hit the U.S. market in 2024. But the partnership will see an extension as these giant manufacturers come up with a way to make a series of affordable electric vehicles hand in hand.
In particular, Honda and G.M. plan to build a global production capacity for millions of electric vehicles starting in 2027, including compact crossovers. Then in their joint press release, the two automakers discuss their plans on sharing their best technologies, designs, and manufacturing strategies to deliver affordable and desirable E.V.s on a global scale, including in their key markets.
"General Motors (NYSE: G.M.) and Honda (NYSE: HMC) today announced plans to expand the two companies' relationship to a new chapter by codeveloping a series of affordable electric vehicles based on a new global architecture using next-generation Ultium battery technology." the press release read.
Tackling Climate Change
But it seems the collaboration is not profit-based. According to CNBC, these electric vehicles about to be produced by G.M. and Honda will most likely cost less than $30,000. Hence, the term 'affordable.'
G.M. Chair and CEO Mary Barra highlighted the purpose of the collaboration with a focus on climate change, "This is a key step to deliver on our commitment to achieve carbon neutrality in our global products and operations by 2040 and eliminate tailpipe emissions from light-duty vehicles in the U.S. by 2035."
Likewise, Honda President and Ceo Toshihiro added Honda's commitment to reaching carbon neutrality globally by 2050. They also believe that driving down the cost of electric vehicles can significantly help their goal.
Honda and General Motors promise to develop a successful technology partnership to help accelerate the sale of electric vehicles and create a greener future.
