Toyota's plug-in hybrid vehicle sales figured in a dramatic decrease of up to 20 percent in the first quarter of 2022 in the United States.
On the other hand, the sales of the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid increased significantly.
Toyota Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle Sales 2022
As per a news story by Inside EVs, Toyota Motor North America announced its sales report for the first quarter of 2022, wherein the Japanese carmaker admitted that it suffered 14.7 percent fewer shipments than in 2021.
Meanwhile, the luxury car division of Toyota that goes by the name Lexus also saw a decline in its sales in the first quarter of 2022, wherein it plummeted by 13.3 percent.
In total, the sales of both Toyota and Lexus for the first three months of 2022 are down by 514,592 units of shipments than their performance last year or in the first quarter of 2021.
On top of that, it is worth noting that the Japanese carmaker, which has dominated the world of fuel-powered vehicles, is now also venturing into electric plug-in cars.
However, Toyota plug-in sales declined by 20 percent, or 7,819 hybrid vehicles in the first quarter of 2022 when compared to the figures of the automaker in 2021.
Inside EVs noted in its report that Toyota offers three plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States, such as the Toyota Prius Prime, the Toyota RAV4 Prime, and the new Lexus NX Plug-in Hybrid.
Toyota Prius Prime Sales
According to a recent report by Forbes, the Toyota Prius Prime is the top "biggest money-saving plug-in hybrid" vehicle for 2022.
The news outlet highlighted that the Prius Prime flaunts a 54 mpg when it is in hybrid mode. However, its EV power books up to 133 mpg for its first 25 miles.
Toyota Motors North America disclosed that the sales of the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid in the first quarter of 2022 sank by 63 percent.
Toyota RAV4 Prime Sales
On the flip side, the Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in impressively garnered a massive increase in sales of up to 87 percent in the same period.
Forbes stated that the hybrid more of the RAV4 Prime goes up to 38 mpg, whereas its EV power when it is running its first 42 miles boasts up to 94 mpg.
