Tax season is here, and the IRS is now accepting tax returns for 2021. The deadline for these tax returns is on Apr. 18, but there are some massive changes to the free tax-filing tools that are currently available.
Tax Filing for Incomes Below $73,000
If your adjusted gross income for 2021 was $73,000 or below, you could use the IRS Free File Program. The program is a partnership between the IRS and several paid tax software companies, according to HowtoGeek.
If you qualify for the program, you can cause specific tax programs for free. You can do your federal taxes, do state taxes, take advantage of all the features, and do all of these for free.
However, remember that the free versions available through IRS Free File are different from the normal free versions available on each website on the program.

To take full advantage of this offer, you need to start by using the IRS Free File version of the software. If you meet the qualifications, you can use the software without charge, and even the features are free.
Remember not to use the regular free version of the program because you will be required to pay for the features and other upsells.
To start, visit the official IRS Free File website. You can go through all of the available Free File offers or use the IRS Free File lookup tool to discover the Free File software that supports your situation.
Different tax programs have different limitations, which are explained thoroughly on the page, according to Nerd Wallet.
Consider Using MyFreeTaxes
MyFreeTaxes is a free tax service operated by The United Way. The organization offers a free version of TaxSlayer without any limitations on the forms that you use, according to NPR.
If you start using TaxSlayer through The United Way, you will be allowed to use it as long as your income is around $73,000 or below.
The TaxySlayer offered by the IRS Free File website can be used by those with an income of $39,000 or less. As for the one offered by The United Way can be used by those who make $73,000 or below a year.
You need to begin your return by clicking through the MyFreeTaxes website.
Consider TurboTax Free Edition
Intuit offers a free version of TurboTax, but it is only for simple tax situations. For example, even if your 2021 income was low, you will have to pay to upgrade from TurboTax Free Edition if you want to deduct student loan interest.
Cash App Taxes
This year, Credit Karma Tax transforms into Cash App Taxes. Like Credit Karma Tax, Cash App Taxes are free for all, and there are no upsells.
Despite the name change, this is the same app like Credit Karma Tax. It should be good if you have used it in the past few years and are happy with the service.
Intuit made a name change because the company acquired Credit Karma but was required by the government to sell Credit Karma Tax as part of the deal.
