Google Play Movies & TV app has made its debut on Apple's iOS App Store, giving iPhone and iPad users access to a wider range of content. The iOS version of the app joins the Google Play Books and Google Play Music that were made available in the App Store earlier.
Apple lovers who also tap the technology of Google's $35 wonder dongle Chromecast have all the reasons to welcome the newest Google app. Chromecast, which can be plugged onto a big screen and can pull content from the user's Chrome browser or from any mobile device, can be synced with the Google Play Movies & TV app, allowing users to enjoy more content than what they could previously access.
"Movie and TV lovers, the Google Play Movies & TV app is now available for iOS... Buy or rent new release movies and next-day TV shows by visiting the Google Play Store on your computer (play.google.com), and then watch them instantly using the Play Movies & TV app on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Best of all, you can use #Chromecast to watch your Google Play movies and TV shows on any HDTV, simply cast them from your iPhone or iPad to your TV," Google Play announced through its official Google+ account.
The iOS version of Google Play Movies & TV app, however, has its limitations, thanks to Apple, which loves to seal its ecosystem. For instance, the app cannot be used to purchase or rent content and to do that, users will have to use their mobile browsers. The app can stream the content but, here too, there's a couple of limitations. First, offline viewing is not possible and streaming can only be done via Wi-Fi. Secondly, the app can only stream content in standard definition format if the user chooses to view it on his/her mobile device.
Nonetheless, the new app gives iOS users a wider choice of content, especially those that cannot be found on Hulu or Netflix. Using Chromecast will also allow the users to stream the media, in HD quality, to a bigger screen. Google is also expected to soon tweak the Google Play Movie & TV app to make it more functional and enjoyable for iOS users.
