Amazon MGM Acquisition: Bond Film Franchise and More Heading to Prime Thanks to $8.45B Deal

Amazon's acquisition of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) is a massive deal that cost the e-commerce company as much as $8.45 billion. However, it secures the company's massive movie franchises, including that of the Bond films, Rocky Balboa, the famous television series Fargo, the Pink Panther franchise, and many more that may enhance the Prime Video streaming platform.

Amazon's blog post details the many films and franchises under MGM, and its acquisition will only mean that the e-commerce company is getting all of it. The company finalized the deal that cost them a hefty $8.45 billion, and it is only the company's second-highest acquisition compared to their Whole Foods purchase in 2017.

The e-commerce company boasted of the massive library under MGM that they already own, as many as 4,000 film titles, 17,000 TV episodes, and the many Academy and Emmy awards it won.

Various franchises are coming to Amazon Prime Video and they can do whatever they want to it, including reboots, remakes, crossovers, and continuation on its streaming platform.

"MGM has a nearly century-long legacy of producing exceptional entertainment, and we share their commitment to delivering a broad slate of original films and television shows to a global audience," said Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon Studios.

Prime Video is saying hello to the Ian Fleming "James Bond" film franchise, "Rocky Balboa," "Silence of the Lambs," "Vikings," "The Handmaid's Tail," "Stargate," "RoboCop," "The Addams Family," and "Legally Blonde."

Amazon's Ventures

Amazon began to post its offer to MGM's studio and its entirety as a company as early as May 2021, and the company already posted its interest to purchase it by as much as $9 billion. The acquisition is one of the most significant purchases of the e-commerce company, and it joins the Whole Foods venture that cost the company $13.7 billion.

The deal pushed through and it brings a massive future for Amazon and its Prime Video entertainment platform that will soon have the streaming rights to various films. However, it does not end on streaming as it will also get a chance to make Prime Video Originals with these titles, alongside franchise reboots, and crossovers.

MGM is a renowned company in the entertainment and the arts, bringing the world to famous titles that defined the medium for many years. Now, it joins the massive company of Amazon and gets to share its resources from the Jeff Bezos-owned ventures, as it still falls under the billionaire's enterprise that started with its e-commerce.
