'Starfield' Will Allow Players To Join The 'Bad Guys' If They Want

New "Starfield" details were revealed in a recently uploaded Bethesda dev diary, and they contain several interesting tidbits when it comes to the game's role-playing element.

According to DualShockers, Bethesda has confirmed that players can join any faction they want in the game-even the so-called "bad guys." This came alongside the reveal of a total of four different factions within "Starfield": the United Colonies, the Freestar Collective, Ryujin Industries, and the group of pirate raiders known as the Crimson Fleet.

Here is the dev diary uploaded to Bethesda's official YouTube channel, if you want to see it in its entirety. It is hosted by long-time studio mainstay Todd Howard, alongside lead quest designer Will Shen, design director Emil Pagliarulo, and lead artist Istvan Pely:

Shen said that joining any of these factions will showcase its own individual storyline. He did, however, say that Ryujin will have the "best start" out of all the factions, assuming you can prove yourself after getting hired by them.

But as per the "bad guys," aka the Crimson Fleet, there are options for players there as well. They can just join the faction and simply live out their journey as a space pirate, or perhaps infiltrate the organization and bring them down from the inside out-like an undercover cop.

With this, the Crimson Fleet might have just opened itself up as the faction to join for players who want to do an "evil" playthrough of "Starfield."

'Starfield' Factions At A Glance

More details about the specific factions were shared in the dev diary, so players have an idea of what to expect ahead of the release. That's because according to Bethesda, choosing which faction to join will be among the first major decisions you'll make within the game.

Since the Crimson Fleet has already been introduced, here are the other factions in a bit more detail:

  • United Colonies: This faction is basically "Starfield's" version of the Galactic Republic from "Star Wars". As per Shen, the Colonies is the representation of the future of an idealized space republic (via IGN).

  • Freestar Collective: Consider this faction the one you join if you want to go full-on space western, since those who are members of the collective live their lives out on the frontier.

  • Ryujin Industries: This is basically "Starfield's" version of "Cyberpunk 2077's" Corpo life path, wherein players get hired by a big corporation to do their dirty work.

Channeling 'Hardcore RPGs' Of Old

"Starfield" has a lot to live up to, being a Bethesda game itself (pretty sure you know about how legendary the "Elder Scrolls" RPGs were). As such, the developers ensured that their first new IP in over 20 years will be taking cues from its predecessors.

Howard claims that the space-based RPG will be aiming for many things that "older hardcore RPGs used to do," and reinvent them in a more modern way for modern audiences (via PCGamer).
