In 2020, Facebook was only the 2nd favorite of phishing scammers. But, the giant social media platform is now the most targeted site.

"This is not a big surprise as, over the last few years, KnowBe4's quarterly phishing reports have consistently revealed that LinkedIn phishing messages, in particular, dominate as the top social media email subject to watch out for," said KnowBe4's security advocate, Erich Kron.

He added that social media platforms had been the main targets of various online attackers, especially scammers.

Identifying Fake Facebook Pages

Since Facebook is now the most impersonated website of phishing scammers, it is important to know how you can identify fake FB pages. Fox 13's recent report provided some of the methods you can try:

  • Always check if the posted photos on the Facebook page are fewer compared to the legitimate social media platform.
  • Check the timeline it was created. If the page was published no more than a year, then that's definitely a fake one.
  • The names of fake Facebook accounts can also be used to identify them. If the name of a page or an account you are accessing combines popular names, such as "John Brown," then there's a high chance that online attackers create it.

In other news, Facebook's Campus app has been removed by Meta. Meanwhile, Meta's Facebook Fact-Check for Russia has been partially blocked from the country.
