On top of the current struggles of app-based drivers to make money, the gas price hike has introduced a new problem. With that, some Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash drivers have decided to stop working to avoid having to fill up their tanks more often.
DoorDash Driver Expresses Concerns Over Impact of Gas Increase
According to the story by USAToday, as a gallon of gas' average price starts to hit new all-time highs, drivers are expressing their concerns as well as contemplating whether or not to work as an Uber, Lyft, or DoorDash driver is worth it anymore.
As per a DoorDash driver in Atlanta, Liang Feria, who has been driving for the app-based company since 2019, says that he decided to stop dashing due to 70% of what he was making just going towards gas.
Feria noted that as the prices of gas increased, it was like everything the dasher was making went straight towards his gas tank. The dasher gave a strong statement saying, "it's just not worth it anymore."
As per the dasher, there was still no word from DoorDash regarding the company's plans (if there were any) regarding potential sites to help the drivers offset the rising gas costs. According to the article, however, thousands of people are now wanting "companies to help immediately."
Almost 6,000 Signatures Reached on a Coworker Petition
As seen on Coworker, the goal of 6,000 signatures has almost been reached, with a whopping 5,755 signatures having been gained by the time of this writing. The petition's goal was to ask Lyft and Uber to raise the base rates for the drivers to offset the now high cost of gas.
A number of individuals have also started talking about their unhappiness when it comes to ride-sharing or delivery companies and are still wondering if they would be helping their drivers out.
Companies' Response to Current Prices
Luckily, DoorDash gave a statement to USAToday saying that they have provided some ways for dashers to save money on gas. This includes getting a 2% cashback with the DasherDirect credit card at any station, along with discounts for car maintenance.
On the other hand, Uber also stated USAToday saying through Uber Pro, a driver loyalty program, drivers can save on gas as long as they have at least a 4.7 rating and a cancellation rate of less than 3%.
Lyft, on the other hand, works with GetUpside, which is also used by Uber, which allows users to get a 2% cashback at "select gas stations."
