Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, tweeted something quite surprising not just to his followers but also to the electric vehicle industry itself. Elon Musk just said that the world needs more oil and gas.
Elon Musk's Tesla and Its Recent Achievements
According to the story by The Verge, Elon Musk has long been known as the man behind Tesla as well as Tesla Solar. The two companies have been devoting their resources and existence to alternatives to traditional gas cars, oil, and even coal.
For a brief period, the market cap of Tesla was even able to reach a whopping $1 trillion and even deliver almost a million EVs in 2021.
Quite surprisingly, however, the Tesla CE0 suddenly expressed that he is in favor when it came to "increasing oil and gas production."
Musk Says the World Needs to 'Increase Oil & Gas Output Immediately'
Elon Musk just tweeted out that although he hates saying it, the world needs to "increase oil & gas output immediately." In addition, the Tesla CEO said that these "extraordinary times" are calling for "extraordinary measures."
Musk then elaborated that he was aware that his statement could affect Tesla but noted that "sustainable energy solutions," as of the moment, are just not capable of reaching instantaneously in order to make up for the current "Russian oil & gas exports."
Speculations as to Why Elon Musk Said That About Oil
According to the article by The Verge, Musk could be referring to the world's dependence on Russian pipelines. It should be noted, however, that this so-called dependence has not really been able to stop a lot of governments from putting sanctions on Russia after it decided to invade Ukraine.
This has resulted in concerns pertaining to surging energy prices especially in Europe, per CNBC.
The Verge has likewise noted that it was hard to tell if Elon Musk was just trolling or if the head of Tesla actually means to put plans into play whenever he posts a tweet.
SpaceX's Plan to Drill for Natural Gas
Despite Elon Musk's involvement in electricity and renewable energy, his other company, SpaceX is actually planning to drill for natural gas around a Texas Starship facility. As press timet, electricity is not yet enough to launch Elon Musk's rockets from the ground.
Elon Musk clarified his stance in a podcast with Joe Rogan and noted that he is not in favor of "demonizing the oil and gas industry."
He said that the world will remain dependent on fossil fuels for a very long time and pointed out that the real question is "at what rate do we move to a sustainable energy future?"
