Google's major ad tracking privacy changes might be another problem for Facebook since the search engine giant plans to copy the move made by Apple in its iOS.
The giant iPhone maker announced back in April 2021 that its consumers can choose if the apps they install on their smartphones can track their online activities.
After Apple released the iOS 14.5 version at the end of April 2021, app developers were required to ask permission from the consumers before they can conduct ad tracking.
As expected, the majority of iPhone users decided to restrict the apps they install from tracking their activities.
Google's Major Ad Tracking Privacy Changes
According to Business Insider's latest report, the major ad tracking privacy changes that Google will implement are quite similar to those made by Apple.
"Today, we're announcing a multi-year initiative...with the goal of introducing new, more private advertising solutions," said Anthony Chavez, the current Android product management vice president.
Recently, Meta said that it might lose $10 billion before 2022 ends. CFO David Wehner said that the app restriction implemented on iOS devices is the one to blame.
As of the moment, Meta still hasn't confirmed if Google's own ad tracking privacy changes can further increase the expected revenue loss.
But, since Facebook relies on advertisements to earn money, there's a high chance that Google's ad tracking changes will affect it.
User Data Limit and Other Details
The Verge reported that Android devices currently have the so-called advertising ID (a unique identifier). Developers use this to create in-app targeted ads.
However, once the ad tracking privacy changes are implemented by Google, the advertising ID will be removed from the smartphone system.
This means that user data sharing will be limited, preventing third parties from using consumers' personal details to generate advertisements.
Aside from this, if developers want their applications to continue operating on Android, they need to do it without using cross-app identifiers, especially the advertising ID.
In other news, a Google Chrome emergency update was recently released because of a new zero-day flaw. Meanwhile, the new Google Chrome OS Flex arrived on PCs and Mac laptops.
