Twitter Expands Access For Autoblocking Safety Mode Beta Along With a Companion Feature

Twitter will now expand the beta access for its anti-harassment tool Safety Mode. The social media app introduced this feature back in September 2021 wherein users could autoblock suspicious accounts to prevent further "unwelcomed intentions" in the platform.

According to CNET, the service was initially offered to only a small group which is composed of about 750 beta users. For the expansion, Twitter will now allow it to become available to a large pool of people.

This time, the anti-abuse tool can now be used by 50% of the individuals who reside in select countries such as the US, the UK, New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, and Canada.

During its previous release, the social media platform let the users test this feature against potential harassment from strangers and even from people that they know.

Moreover, Twitter considered actions such as verbal insults and annoying replies as "potentially harmful" language which should not be allowed in the social media space.

The expansion was also a part of the company's mission to garner more insights regarding the Safety Mode beta. With that being said, Twitter wants to hear the suggestions from the public in order to revamp the feature or add extra improvements.

Amid concerns circling harassment, The Verge reported that nearly 217 million users have been experiencing this issue. There was also a time when people called out Twitter for being a "toxic" social media place for women.

This statement can be found in the 2018 study conducted by Amnesty International and Element AI. The research tackled that every 30 seconds on average, female journalists encountered abusive tweets on the platform.

Twitter Brings Companion Feature

Aside from the beta access for the Safety Mode auto blocking, Twitter also launched the Proactive Safety Mode, a companion feature that will help the platform alert people, over uninvited replies.

"For this reason, our technology will now proactively identify potentially harmful or uninvited replies and prompt people in the beta to consider enabling Safety Mode," the social media company said.

For now, the anti-harassment feature will bar unwanted visitors from harassing their online victims. The Safety Mode feature is a crucial step to make Twitter a safe space for individuals who just want solitude on social media.
