The people at CyanogenMod have announced a new photo management app to replace the official Android gallery app. CyanogenMod's app is now in beta, and it is called GalleryNext. We expect the name to change once it comes out of beta, but we are not yet certain when that will be at this moment in time. According to the team, GalleryNext will bring some nice features without being overly complicated for the end user.
The GalleryNext app will be able to store your photos on your phone locally, along with in the cloud. Furthermore, the app will support integration with popular social networks such as Flickr, Picasa, Google Plus, Facebook, and Dropbox. Additionally, GalleryNext is not just an app to store and view images,, it will also have the ability to playback video content. These features are similar to what the official Android gallery app is capable of doing, so why is CyanogenMod creating this gallery app? The reason is that Google plans to replace the Android gallery app with Google+ Photos, which is something some users refuse to be a part of.
Many users might also like the addition of animated gif support since animated gifs are probably one of the most viewed things on the Internet due to Memes.
The following is the full list of features one should expect from GalleryNext.
- View all your pictures in one centralized location
- Cloud services integration with Flickr, Picasa (G+), Facebook, and Dropbox
- Moments support (automatic grouping and classification of media based on metadata)
- Video playback support
- Gif support
- Deduplication in 'All' view
Those who are interested may join the CyanogenMod on Google+, and then follow the instructions on how to download the app.
Android users should expect to see several new Gallery apps in the near future due to Google's plan to replace the Android gallery app with Google+ Photos. This isn't the first time Google has chosen to force its social network into one of its services. YouTube is a prime example of this, and it did not go down well with users thus far.
