Set Up the Recovery Contact on Your iPhone, iPad and Mac, Here's How

If you ever forget your passcode or your Apple ID password, you may think that there is no longer a solution.

However, Apple has added a recovery contact feature that allows you to access your Apple account even if you forgot your passcode or password.

What Recovery Contact Does

Apple has made it easy for users to recover their Apple account on their iOS 15, iPadOS15, and macOS Monterey devices. It added a feature that lets you put in someone you trust, like a close friend or a family member, as a recovery contact.

Suppose you ever get locked out of your account, or you can't remember your Apple ID password at all. In that case, the recovery contact feature will share a six-digit recovery code that you will need to enter into your device so you can log in again, according to HowtoGeek.

You have the option to add five recovery contacts to your account. In order to add a recovery contact, you first need to make sure that your device is running the latest software version and that the Apple ID's authentication is active. You also need to be above 13 years old.

Recovery Contact on iPad and iPhone

On your iPad or iPhone that runs the iOS 15 software or the iPadOS 15 software, you can set up a recovery contact that may belong to your friend or your family, according to MacRumors.

To begin, you need to open the Settings app on your device and tap on your account name that is seen at the top.

Under the account, choose "Password and Security." Under that, choose "Account Recovery." Then, choose "Add Recovery Contact."

Apple will then show you the members of a sharing group that you are a part of. If you don't see it, you can select "Choose Someone Else" so you can add another contact from your list.

You will see a message preview for the person that you wish to add as a recovery contact. Once you are ready, select "Send."

That will send an invite to the one you have added as a contact. The person needs to accept the request to appear on your list on your device.

Recovery Contact on Mac

The process of adding a contact on a Mac is basically the same. If you forgot your Mac password, you would need to have a macOS Monterey so you can use this feature, according to CNET.

Begin by going to the Apple menu seen in the top-left corner of the screen and choosing "System Preferences." Next, choose the Apple ID feature located in the top-right.

In the settings, choose "Password and Security" from the left column and choose the Manage button right next to the Account Recovery option.

Just tap on the plus icon so you can add a recovery contact.

Choose "Add Recovery Contact" and enter your administrator password to proceed. If you are a part of the sharing group, you will see the family members there. You can also select the option that lets you choose someone else.

Once you are done, a blue checkmark will appear, and just click on continue. When you've finalized everything, select Done.
