Upcoming Twitter Trends to Expect in 2022

Twitter is currently one of the most used social media tools by marketers and regular users who visit the site for entertainment or business. Either way, some experts shared their predictions about the upcoming trends on the platform for 2022.

After starting as an official social media page, the sharing platform gradually adopts the business landscape through its new features.

If you are wondering what we could expect from Twitter next year, here's everything you need to know about the key trends that could likely occur soon.

Twitter Trends in 2022

According to a report from Finance Online, marketing expert Jeff Bulas predicted that Twitter's fate will depend on several factors, including external developments, market forces, and the whole organization itself.

To begin with, Twitter might be a popular social media site, but it's not as outstanding as Facebook and Instagram when it comes to visits.

Statistica released statistics based on the share of visits among Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. The former got the least number of visits at 14.43% at that time, while FB and Pinterest got 60.52% and 21.04%, respectively.

Twitter as Social Media News Site

The same report wrote that Twitter would remain a dominant site for news. The most common audience of the platform came from 68% of adults. They prefer to browse on it over other news sites.

Based on a recent survey, 53% of them continue to prefer Twitter to search national and local news. Still, the platform lags behind YouTube and Facebook for a similar purpose.

With that, the experts claimed that Twitter would someday dominate the field of social media news through its various reports about education, health, politics, and other topics.

Twitter Videos Are Effective

The first social media site that comes to your mind when you hear the word "video streaming" is not Twitter. In fact, people would say that these platforms are Facebook and YouTube.

On Twitter, people prefer to watch shorter contents which is enough to convey the message to the target viewers. As the digital age progresses, marketers are slowly getting used to the platform's business tools.

Earlier this year, a study showed that video marketing on Twitter only sits at 43%. It only beats Snapchat at 10%, but it is still behind Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.

However, a study claims how effective a Twitter video is. According to research, watching videos on this site is twice as memorable as watching on premium platforms.

If this trend goes well in 2022, social media marketers will be the ones to most benefit from it.

Recently, Tech Times reported that Twitter now allows video subtitles to play on a muted iOS or Android device automatically.

Twitter Character Limit Expansion

If users wish to improve the site, it could be the number of characters in a single tweet. In 2017, the tech firm decided to extend the character count to 280 from 140. Since then, users could now post more words for their content, but still, there's a lot of protest regarding this call.

Originally, Twitter only lets users type 140 characters, but the founders changed that policy and decided to rebrand the site with a simple tweak.

According to the experts, the character limit expansion could result in fewer workarounds, where users could not depend anymore on shorthand abbreviations. They could also just assemble all the "small" tweets" into a major tweet.

On top of that, sending tweets will be much faster and easier than before because the users now have a higher tendency to frequently tweet on a post.

For marketers, this means that longer content for branding can be shown. To add, it would also boost engagement through successive tweets, hashtags, and mentions.

The upcoming trends on Twitter could still depend on the new CEO Parag Agrawal's decision and his subordinates. In the end, the platform will only aim at what's best for its social media users.
