WiFi passwords protect users from outside intruders who want to steal information from your internet. At some point, you would ask yourself regarding the ideal steps to change them. There are also times that you would question the frequency of altering your passwords for home use or work setup.
To get started, here's a simple guide that will help you change your router's wifi password with ease.
How to Change Your WiFi Password on Your Router
According to a report by D-Link, there are six easy steps that you should take to begin changing your router's password right now. Don't forget these things so you can stay protected and connected on your internet.
Access the router's configuration page through your browser.
You can commence this guide by opening your preferred browser to enter the configuration page of your browser. Make sure to connect to the network to make this happen.
If you can't immediately connect to the WiFi because you forgot your password, grab an Ethernet cable and directly link it to the router. This will no longer require you to enter your previous password.
As you can see in the address bar, you will notice a familiar pattern in the router addresses, such as 10.0.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 for Apple devices.
If there's no progress after doing this, you can tap and hold your router's Reset button for 30 seconds until you access the factory default settings. You can now collect the default router address from pasting it into the internet browser.
Router Username and Password
Before you push through the UI of the system, don't forget to enter your username and password. Most frequently, users stick with the "admin" username as default, and the usual passcode would be "password" or the admin, again.
Remember that this input could be different from one router to another, so always check the router model to see more about the login details.
If in case someone gave you a router that was not yet reset, repeat the 30-second pressing and holding of the button. Upon reverting the information to default, you can log in your credentials. Remember that this would overwrite your router's existing data, so think twice before doing this.
Proceed to the Wireless Section
After logging in on the router, access the configuration page to find the Wireless section. From there, you can see the button for the Wireless Settings or Setup.
Change the Password Now
You can now move forward from the box that indicates "Shared Key," or "Password" by entering your new password. Other routers will require you to re-enter your password to confirm if that is your correct passcode.
In creating a password, always aim for the one that you cannot simply guess. Set aside terms related to you and stick using a mix of numbers, letters, and special characters. Your password should contain at least eight (8) characters.
Go to Security Type
Among the three options for wireless encryption, you can select WPA2, WPA, and WEP. The first one offers the most secure network among them all. You can also change it to WPA later. However, we don't recommend using WEP since it could be easily encrypted.
Save Your Router Settings
After finishing the above processes, you can now tap Save to save your settings. Once you're done with it, you can re-connect your device to your wireless network.
Another tip to consider is how often you should change your WiFi password. According to CBS Detroit, it is recommended to do such every three months so you can guarantee that leechers who slow down your internet once in a while.
