Duolingo is working on a math app for kids, the company's CEO has revealed.
The company, however, refused to share more details as the math app for kids is still in its very early stages.
There is a possibility that the math app for kids that Duolingo is working on will be mentioned during the company's annual conference, Duocon. Duocon is scheduled to take place later this month.
Duolingo Working on Math App for Kids
Duolingo's math app for kids may be kept under wraps for now due to its being in very early stages of development, but a job listing the company has posted has given hints about it.
According to a report by TechCrunch, Duolingo put up a job posting last May for a learning scientist for math.
The Duolingo job posting reads, "Duolingo is venturing into teaching math! Our strengths lie in building educational apps that are well grounded in learning science and keep learners motivated — come join us to help build a new Duolingo math app that promotes student growth and is fun to use!"
Anyone applying for the learning scientist position is required to have a Ph.D in mathematics education or a related field. "Exceptional candidates" are those who have work experience in the educational technology industry, as well as experience in math education for children.
Duolingo to go Beyond Language Learning
According to the TechCrunch report, Duolingo is planning to expand beyond language learning as seen with the math app for kids it is developing. Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn said in an interview last week that the company is planning to do so through acquisitions it is planning to make.
The Duolingo CEO said that they may consider acquiring a company "if there are other subjects where we think somebody is doing a pretty good job and they have a similar mission to us, and they have a similar company culture."

Duolingo Users Have Mixed Feelings
As the TechCrunch report has noted, the current users of Duolingo have shared what they have said to say about the planned math app for kids in the Duolingo forum. The Duolingo users have mixed feelings regarding the math app for kids.
A user with the handle Baz16166 said in the forum, "It's odd that Duo should consider branching into Maths when its coverage of the majority of languages (with the notable exception of French and Spanish) leaves a great deal to be desired."
Other users seem to be more receptive of the idea of a math app for kids. "Math. Huh? Interesting. I hate math but I am kinda excited to see this happen," a user with the handle Namely. said.
What is Duolingo?
Duolingo is a language-learning website and app that was launched to the public in 2012. It also offers a digital language proficiency assessment exam. Duolingo is accessible for free for anyone, though it also offers premium service for a fee.
Duolingo offers more than 100 language courses in over 30 languages. These languages include Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, German, Hindi, Arabic, Latin, and Greek.
As of press time, courses for languages such as Hungarian, Klingon, Yiddish, and Navajo are in beta.
Duolingo has been a popular app among college students as well as those who are homeschooled.
Duolingo also offers what it calls the Duolingo for Schools, which gives teachers the capacity to track the progress of their students.
