DJI Mavic Air 2 and DJI Air 2S are two of the mid-range drones of the China-based tech giant.
The former has since been the favorite choice of consumers entering this range. However, a newer DJI Air 2S debuted last April 15, serving as another choice for those looking for small drones.
The two mid-range drones are commonly compared due to their similar specs. However, the newer Air 2S boasts a single feature that sets it apart from the other drone--its one-inch camera, TechRadar reported. But more on that later.
On the flip side, the DJI Mavic Air 2 remains cheaper than the newer counterpart. Not to mention that it still won in the comparison in some aspects.
DJI Mavic Air 2 vs. DJI Air 2S: Sensor
It is worth noting that the sensors of the DJI Air S2 and the DJI Mavic Air 2 make them most distinguishable from each other.
The Air S2 features a large 1-inch chip, whereas the Air 2 only sport a ½ inch sensor. The difference in sizes gives the newer mid-range drone the ability to take in more light.
Nevertheless, the Mavic 2 still produces high-quality images despite its smaller sensor. But still, the Air 2S does a better job in recording stills and videos.
Plus, the Pro variant of the Mavic 2 carries the same 1-inch sensor.
DJI Mavic Air 2 vs. DJI Air 2S: Battery Life
Both Air 2 and Air 2S sport the same battery--albeit the newer drone's additional sensors and heavier overall weight.
PCMag noted that Air 2S lasts for about half an hour and a minute. However, the Mavic Air 2 can work a little longer as it is designed to stay afloat for up to 34 minutes.
So, the Mavic Air 2 wins this round by a slight margin. Still, given the factors mentioned earlier, the Air 2S did not disappoint.
DJI Mavic Air 2 vs. DJI Air 2S: Range
The range of both drones relies on the performance of the DJI Ocusync system. The Air 2S, of course, gets that newer Ocusync 3.0, while the Mavic Air 2 is powered by the 2.0.
Although the Ocusync 2.0 does an okay job with no significant problems, the 3.0 improves both range and stability, exhibiting a range of up to 12km, but outside the United States, it could only achieve 8km.

DJI Mavic Air 2 vs. DJI Air 2S: Photo Quality
Lastly, and perhaps the most important part of the comparison, concerns the picture quality that the mid-range drones produce.
The Air 2S has a 20MP resolution, which is lower than the 48MP of the older Mavic Air 2. However, despite the higher pixels, the photos still turned out to be dull in colors and lacking in sharpness.
Nonetheless, the Mavic Air 2 still passes for hobby shooters. However, the Air 2S is more suited for users between the level of being a hobbyist and a pro.
