iPhones and iPads can be used as a wireless keyboard or mouse with the help of free software available on the App Store.

While there is no official Apple solution, there are free third-party apps on the App Store that you can download and use instead.

iPhones and iPads as Wireless Mouse

The first step is to install the iPhone app & companion server. There are numerous apps on the App Store that can install mouse and keyboard functionalities on your device.

One of the most popular apps that people use is the Remote Mouse by Yao Ruan. It is free, and it works as both a keyboard and a mouse. The app can also be used with Windows, macOS, and Linux, according to CNET.

First, download the Remote Mouse for your iPhone or iPad. Then head to the Remote Mouse homepage and download the server.

Make sure that you download the right one for your operating system. If you use a Mac, you can get the Remote Mouse app from the MacApp Store.

With the app and companion server both installed, it is time to set everything up to work wirelessly over Wi-Fi.

For the app to work, your iPhone or iPad will have to be on the same wireless network as the computer you want to control, according to LifeWire.

First, launch the server on your computer, launch the mobile app on your iPhone or iPad, and grant access to the local network and Bluetooth.

You will see a prompt that is already connected to a server, but if you don't, tap on the "Not Connected" bar at the top of your screen. You should see the name of your computer appear in the list, then tap on it to secure a connection.

If you are using a Mac, you will be prompted to grant Remote Mouse the access that it needs to control the computer, according to How to Geek.

In order to do this, launch System Preferences > Security & Privacy, and then on the Privacy tab, select Accessibility from the list that will appear on the left.

Click on the padlock located in the bottom-left corner of your screen and enter your admin password. You can now check the box next to Remote Mouse in the right-hand pane and allow the device to control your computer.

Test Your Wireless Mouse to Get Started

Make sure to dismiss any remaining notices that you see on screen. Pick up your iPhone or your iPad to test it. You might need to dismiss some onscreen tips by swiping it, after which you should be able to use your iPhone or your iPad to control your computer fully.

If you need to access key combinations that are not available on the iPhone or iPad keyboard, use the Fn and Ctrl buttons.

Any text you type appears in the middle of the touchpad, so you won't always need to look up while typing.

You can also set up an ad-hoc local wireless network on your Mac and connect to it if you need a mouse but don't have access to Wi-Fi.
