TikTok is now making efforts to crack down on minors leading to up to 7 million accounts deleted. Although quite confusing since TikTok, designed like other social media platforms with an age restriction, the platform is still very popular with minors.
TikTok Removes 'Suspected Underage Accounts'
According to Mashable, TikTok might be widely known for its pretty young, viral dance craze-loving user base, users will still have to pretend like they are at least 13 years and up in order to use the platform. TikTok released a transparency report just recently which covered the first three months of the year 2021.
Although TikTok has released a number of reports in the past that detail a number of policy-breaking content, this was the first time the platform decided to tackle another topic. TikTok noted that for the very first time, they are publishing the number of "suspected underage accounts" removed as they are still working on making sure that the full TikTok experience is a place for people that are at least 13 and over.
11 Million Total Accounts Deleted
The number of accounts that were ultimately removed is quite shocking. Out of the 11,149,514 accounts that were deleted due to them breaking the whole service's community guidelines or terms of service, there are a whopping 7,263,952 of them were actually "suspected underage accounts."
The word "suspected" should really be stressed as there currently is still no way to tell just how many users who are actually under the age of 13 were really using the service or even continue to use the service. These are just the accounts wherein users really did enter their true birthday being either 12 years old or maybe even younger while signing up directly for the service.

TikTok Age Restriction and Features
Although the number might be quite high, according to TikTok, this still makes up just less than 1% of all the platform's registered users. The company also highlighted just how users that are under the age of 12 are able to sign up to a special curated version of the platform oriented directly to their age group.
This is called the TikTok for Younger Users. Although users that are 13 and over are already allowed on the popular TikTok platform, the company did roll out special settings for those that are under the age of 18 some time earlier this year. The default account settings for those users that are between age 13 and 15 is ultimately set to private.
There are also restrictions on who is capable of downloading their video and even engaging along with their content. There are a few similar settings restrictions for those users that are between the age of 16 and 17 as well. For those that want to use the TikTok platform, it is important to follow the rules and regulations of the platform.
