After updating Twitter, a prompt will now welcome iOS users asking them to enable the Ad Tracking feature, which is part of the App Tracking Transparency of Apple.
The latest update is exciting to some users looking forward to broadcasting on Spaces. The said version of Twitter will now support the audio-only feature. However, there is a catch.
Supposedly enthusiastic users upon opening the latest version will be asked to allow Twitter to track your data.
Twitter, in a prompt, explained that ad tracking will "keep ads relevant to you," MacRumors reports. It headlines: "More choices for relevant ads on iOS 14.5+."
At the bottom of the prompt, there is only one button. And it says: "Continue." After tapping, it will redirect you to the actual settings of Apple's App Tracking Transparency. You may now choose from "Not to Track" or allow Twitter to track.
Apple users started requiring apps to ask for permission if they want to track user data to sell to advertisers. It began when iOS 14.5 launched on April 26.
And Twitter, since then, has been quiet about it. It is only now that the social media app is joining other apps in implementing the new privacy feature of Apple.
Twitter Asks Politely
Compared to Facebook's fear-mongering notice to iOS users, Twitter chose to be relaxed with the matter.
The notification asking for ad tracking enabled ends with: "You can decide if you'll allow tracking in the iOS prompt and you can always change this later in your device settings."
Bad News for Apps, Good News for Users
On the flip side, Facebook and Instagram told users that enabling ad tracking will allow the apps to stay free. It means that doing otherwise will force them to charge users.
The Apple privacy feature may have been unfortunate news for social media giants as their business model primarily relies on digital advertisements. However, in contrast, the added privacy is preferred by iPhone users, an ongoing study showed.
The study revealed statistics that may be what social media giants are dreading long before Apple's new feature was launched. Only 4% of iOS users are allowing apps to track their data. Nearly all are, indeed, choosing to utilize the App Tracking Transparency.
Furthermore, Twitter said, in the past, that the said feature will only have a "modest impact" on their earnings, Apple Insider reported.
In February, as Twitter was boasting its fourth-quarter earnings, it said that it expects its revenue to increase in 2021. It is despite the dragging effect of Apple's newest privacy feature on the social media company.
