With all of the news about Resident Evil Village getting gamers talking recently, another RE game is seemingly flying under the radar.
Android Central reports that a Resident Evil 4 VR remake will be coming to Oculus Quest 2. Capcom announced the game during a special stream featuring a full-scale Resident Evil game showcase.
The upcoming release was made in partnership with Armature Studios and Oculus Studios, and is actually the first time ever that a Resident Evil game would be available on virtual reality separate from the Playstation ecosystem, according to Forbes.
No other VR platforms are confirmed to support the upcoming game, which means that until we get more information, the remake will be exclusive to the Oculus Quest 2 platform.
Revamped Controls
With the Resident Evil 4 VR remake, players will be taking on the role of Leon Kennedy again, but this time, the camera will be in his head. The game will feature fully revamped controls to take advantage of the VR platform, wherein players will be taking control of Leon's left and right hand individually, reports GamesRadar.
The remake will be showcasing the game's reworked mechanics like never before. Whereas they used to work the environment around and solve puzzles in third person, they now can manipulate things with their own hands. However, it's still unclear how the developers will be reworking the quick-time events that RE4 is known for.
Was This Already Leaked Last Year?
The official announcement comes after rumors of an RE4 remake surfaced around April of last year. An internet sleuth by the handle of Dusk Golem leaked that Capcom had a "larger team" working on the RE4 remake than those who worked on the previous ones.
It's also worth noting that this Resident Evil 4 VR remake is nothing new to the current status of the franchise as a whole, with a lot of HD reworks of older games releasing for the current generation platforms. In fact, there was already a so-called "Ultimate HD Edition" of Resident Evil 4, though fans still weren't satisfied with how the visuals turned out and they opted to mod the game to further enhance its visuals.
With The Resident Evil 4 VR Remake Confirmed, Is It Time To Go Back To VR?
Some gamers and tech geeks might notice that virtual reality didn't exactly pan out as the 'future of video games' that people hoped for. Remember back in 2016 when VR was all the rage? Companies like AMD even released an affordable VR-ready graphics card, the RX 480, which they marketed to budget-conscious gamers looking to play VR for the next 3-4 years.
Today, however, VR releases are few and far between. What turned out to be the talk of the town was Ray Tracing, which is the current focus of NVIDIA, AMD, and even big-name game developers. But perhaps the release of this beloved classic will be the start of people going back to playing virtual reality. If the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake proves to be successful, developers could follow suit with more AAA games releasing on the VR platform within the next few years.
